SpaceX’s Crew Dragon One Step Closer to Human Spaceflight After Flawless Launch
Launch brings plans to resume sending people into space in own spacecraft closer The Guardian UK, 2 MAR 2019. ![]() The launch of Crew Dragon demo (DM-1) as seen from the roof of NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building. What a powerful and moving mission. Another step closer! #spacex #nasa #CrewDragon ... SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft took off on Saturday morning, marking the first major step toward US ambitions to resume sending astronauts into space in its own spacecraft from American soil. The uncrewed spacecraft launched as planned from Nasa’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida at 2.49am local time (07.49 GMT), on top of a Falcon 9 rocket and carrying a dummy pilot called Ripley – a nod to Sigourney Weaver’s character in the Alien movies. The flight will provide SpaceX and Nasa with vital data to determine whether the spacecraft is ready to carry passengers. Nasa ended its space shuttle programme in 2011, opting instead to work with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Boeing on a commercial crew programme. It has since relied on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft to take astronauts into space, which costs $81m a seat (£61m). Crew Dragon’s lift-off has been hit by several delays. “This is really a significant achievement in the history of American space flight,” said Nasa’s administrator, Jim Bridenstine. “We want to make sure we keep our partnership with Russia, which has been very strong for a long period of time, going back to the Apollo Soyuz era, but we also want to make sure we have our own capability to get back and forth to the International Space Station, so that we can have this strong partnership where they can launch on our rockets and we can launch on their rockets. “But I think another big milestone here is the idea that we’re not as an agency, as Nasa, we’re not purchasing, owning and operating our own rockets at this point, we’re looking to a future where we can be a customer, one customer of many customers in a very robust commercial marketplace in lower Earth orbit.” The crew capsule is expected to reach the ISS at 6.05am (11.05 GMT) on Sunday, delivering around 400 pounds of cargo and staying for around five days before returning to Earth. A trial carrying passengers for the first time could happen as soon as July. The astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley have been lined up for the flight. SpaceX Demo-1: Falcon 9 Launches Crew Dragon & Falcon 9 First Stage Landing SpaceX Demo-1 mission: a Falcon 9 rocket launched the Crew Dragon spacecraft from the Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 2 March 2019, at 07:49 UTC (02:49 EST). Demo-1 is SpaceX’s first uncrewed test flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft on a mission to the International Space Station. The Crew Dragon transports roughly 180 kg (400 pounds) of crew supplies and equipment, as well as an anthropomorphic test device (ATD) fitted with sensors and nicknamed Ripley. Following stage separation, Falcon 9’s first stage (Block 5 B1051) landed on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship, stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. The Crew Dragon is scheduled to automatically dock to the Harmony module’s International Docking Adapter (IDA) on 3 March 2019, at around 11:00 UTC (06:00 EST). Credit: NASA/SpaceX ![]() .

New SpaceX Rocket Starship Prototype Explodes into Ball of Flames During Maiden Launch
The prototype Serial Number 4 burst into a fireball at SpaceX's Boca Chica site in south Texas moments after the engine was ignited for a pressurized test Daily Mirror UK, 30 MAY 2020 A prototype of SpaceX's rocket, Starship, exploded during its maiden launch last night, ahead of the Falcon 9 launch later today. The prototype Serial Number 4 burst into a fireball at SpaceX's Boca Chica site in south Texas moments after the engine was ignited for a pressurized test. The failed launch comes just two days after Elon Musk's company had to abort the Falcon 9 launch of two NASA astronauts from Florida's Kennedy Space Center. The mission, called ‘Launch America,’ was set to take astronauts Robert Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station. It happened after the engine was ignited for a pressurized test But just 16 minutes and 54 seconds before takeoff, the mission was aborted. The adverse weather conditions meant that the milestone mission had to be cancelled and was rescheduled for 3.22pm on Saturday. If it is successful, it would be the first time American astronauts have been launched from US soil in nine years. The failed launch comes just two days after Elon Musk's company had to abort the Falcon 9 launch Starship, a rocket standing 394 feet tall, is designed to carry humans and 100 tons of cargo to the moon and Mars It is the space company's planned next-generation fully reusable launch vehicle, the center of Musk's ambitions to make human space travel affordable. The south Texas facility sits near a small neighbourhood that SpaceX has been trying to buy up for testing space, but some residents have pushed back on the company's offers and have accused Musk's attorneys of unrealistically low property appraisals. SpaceX was among the three companies awarded a combined $1billion by NASA last month to develop rocket systems capable of ferrying cargo and humans to the moon. SpaceX proposed Starship for the award. The FAA granted the space company a license Thursday to begin Starship's first suborbital flight tests, though it was unclear when those tests would occur.

SpaceX: Amateur Astronauts Launch on Inspiration4 Mission......
Four amateur astronauts have blasted off from Florida on their private mission to orbit. Earlier Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos went above Earth's atmosphere in their own space vehicles. SpaceX Launch Lights up Night Sky in Florida & Colorado BBC News 16 SEP 2021. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Inspiration4 crew, comprising one billionaire and three "ordinary citizens", rode out of the Kennedy Space Center in a Dragon capsule provided by the SpaceX rocket company. The quartet will spend the next three days circling the Earth. It's another milestone in the space tourism market, which is experiencing a resurgence after a decade's hiatus. Earlier this summer, billionaire businessmen Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos went above Earth's atmosphere in their own space vehicles. And following this latest mission, there'll be two privateer visits to the International Space Station (ISS) - one in October, carrying a Russian movie director and an actress, and a second early in the New Year. The Inspiration4 crew of Jared Issacman, Hayley Arceneaux, Sian Proctor and Chris Sembroski have had six months of intensive training with SpaceX. However, onboard computer systems will be in control of their Dragon capsule, overseen by SpaceX teams on the ground. The Dragon is not going anywhere near the ISS. It's on a "free flight" to a target altitude of 575km (360 miles). That's about 150km above the orbiting laboratory, and roughly the height from where the Hubble Space Telescope views the cosmos. Even if they don't have a destination as such, the foursome will have plenty to keep them occupied. They've taken up scientific experiments to be conducted inside their Dragon capsule, and SpaceX has modified their temporary home to include a big window, which the crew is sure to be using during downtime to wonder at the Earth below. The Inspiration4 venture was purchased from SpaceX by Mr Isaacman, 38, who made his fortune developing systems to process credit card payments. But rather than go on an "outing with fishing buddies", he decided, as he saw it, to inject real purpose into the flight. So, he gifted the three adjacent seats to people with inspirational stories.

SpaceX Moon Flight to Include DJ, YouTuber and K-Pop Rapper
A commercial DJ, K-pop rapper, and a space YouTuber are to go on a trip around the Moon, after they were picked by a Japanese billionaire for a private SpaceX flight. BBC News 9 DEC 2022. ![]() A SpaceX picture of the Starship spacecraft that the artists would travel on The flight, scheduled for next year, could be the first lunar journey by humans since 1972. Businessman Yusaku Maezawa revealed his crew on Friday after a global search for creative individuals last year. American DJ Steve Aoki and Korean star TOP are the most high-profile picks. The proposed fly-by would see a spacecraft circle the moon, coming within 200km (124 miles) of the surface. The trip would take eight days from launch to return. However, US regulators are yet to give permission for the Starship rocket from Elon Musk's SpaceX company that the crew is supposed to travel on. The ship has not even been approved for an orbital journey around the Earth and has been grounded for the past 18 months in Texas, after it completed a test launch in May 2021. But Mr Maezawa made no mention of this delay in his video announcing the crew for the mission he's dubbed dearMoon. The opening scene shows Mr Maezawa in a Japanese garden looking up at the moon. It then cuts to show the first crew member - DJ Aoki - at one of his shows. "I can't miss this opportunity. My soul is begging for this," the Billboard-charting artist says in the video. The next passenger revealed is Youtuber Tim Dodd - also known as the Everyday Astronaut- who has 1.4 million followers online for his educational videos on spaceflight and astrophysics. In his own video released on Friday the vlogger said he couldn't believe he'd been selected. He added that SpaceX's announcement in 2017 that it would send a civilian to the moon was "ironically, or poetically... actually what got me started making videos on Youtube." The Other Announced DearMoon Mission Members Are: TOP (Choi Seung hyun), a K-pop rapper and former lead of boyband Big Bang (South Korea) Dancer and choreographer Yemi A.D (Czech Republic) Photographer Rhiannon Adam (Ireland) Wildlife photographer Karim Iliya (UK) Filmmaker Brendan Hall (US) Actor Dev Joshi (India) US Olympic snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington and Japanese dancer Miyu were named as back-up dancers. "I hope each and every one will recognise the responsibility that comes with leaving the Earth, travelling to the moon and back," Mr Maezawa said. "They will gain a lot from this experience and I hope they will use that to contribute to the planet, to humanity." Mr Maezawa, who made his fortune in online fashion retailer Zozo, has become prominently involved in commercial space travel. Last year he went to the International Space Station on a Russian rocket for 12 days. --Musk claims Starship rocket close to going orbital... ![]() In 2018, he was named as the first private passenger due to be flown around the moon by SpaceX and said he would sponsor the cost of eight other passengers on board. The price Mr Maezawa agreed to pay for his ticket to space has not been disclosed, but according to Mr Musk it was "a lot of money". In 2020, he also launched a documentary search for a new girlfriend to join him on his moon voyage, before cancelling due to "mixed feelings".

SpaceX Starship: Elon Musks' Big Rocket EXPLODES on Test Flight -AGAIN
Watch all 5 times SpaceX's Starship rocket exploded in a giant fireball BBC News 21 APR 2023 ![]() Elon Musk's SpaceX company's mammoth new rocket Starship, has exploded Three previous explosions of Starship prototypes No-one was hurt in the uncrewed test that lifted off from Texas' east coast on Thursday morning local time. After two to three minutes into the flight, the rocket - the biggest ever developed - started to tumble out of control and was soon destroyed by onboard charges. Mr Musk has said his company will try again in a couple of months. SpaceX engineers still class Thursday's mission as a success. They like to "test early and often" and are not afraid to break things. They will have gathered a mass of data to work towards the next flight. "Congrats @SpaceX team on an exciting test launch of Starship! Learned a lot for next test launch in a few months," Mr Musk tweeted. The Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses rocket launches in the US, said it would oversee a mishap investigation. A spokesman said this was standard practice when a vehicle was lost in flight. But this isn't Starship's first explosion. Four other prototypes have blown up on smaller flights. Even Elon Musk anticipated this, previously hinting that there was a 50% chance it would explode.

ANGER as Musks STARSHIP EXPLODES -MASSIVE Debris Interferes With Flights - Causing DELAYS
WHOLE of Caribbean Airspace Closed SpaceX launch accident likely caused by fire that sent trails of flaming debris near the Caribbean AP 17 JAN 2025 SpaceX suspects a fire may have caused its Starship to break apart during liftoff and send trails of flaming debris near the Caribbean. SpaceXs Elon Musk said preliminary indications are that leaking fuel built up pressure in the cavity above the engine firewall. The resulting fire would have doomed the spacecraft. On Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered SpaceX to investigate what went wrong. The FAA said there were no reports of injuries from Starship debris. The 400-foot Starship ? the worlds biggest and most powerful rocket ? launched from the southern tip of Texas on a test flight early Thursday evening. The booster made it back to the pad for a catch by giant mechanical arms, only the second time in Starship history. But the engines on the still ascending spacecraft shut down one by one, and communication was lost 8 1/2 minutes into the flight. Dramatic video taken near the Turks and Caicos Islands showed spacecraft debris raining down from the sky in a stream of fireballs. Flights near the falling debris had to be diverted OR CANCELLED https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUimsy5IJyA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6hIXB62bUE Billionaire Space Race: Musk and Bezos Compete for Space Conquest ![]() Bezos must be laughing his head off at Musks disaster.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJQTdLXzSzU |

SpaceX Starship Explodes AGAIN Raining Debris Over Caribbean -ANOTHER Failure For Musks Mars Program
Back-to-back mishaps indicate big setbacks for program to launch satellites and send humans to the moon and Mars The Guardian 7 MAR 2025 SpaceX Starship spacecraft exploded on Thursday minutes after lifting off from Texas, dooming an attempt to deploy mock satellites in the second consecutive failure this year for Elon Musks Mars rocket program. Several videos on social media showed fiery debris streaking through the dusk skies near south Florida and the Bahamas after Starship?s breakup in space, which occurred shortly after it began to spin uncontrollably with its engines cut off, a SpaceX livestream of the mission showed. The failure comes just more than a month after the companys SEVENTH Starship flight also ended in an explosive failure. The back to back mishaps occurred in early mission phases that SpaceX has easily surpassed previously, indicating serious setbacks for a program Musk has sought to speed up this year. The 403ft (123-meter) rocket system had lifted off at about 6.30pm ET (2300 GMT) from SpaceXs sprawling Boca Chica, Texas, rocket facilities, with its Super Heavy first-stage booster returning to land as planned. But minutes later, SpaceXs livestream showed the Starship upper stage spinning in space, while a visualization of the rocket?s engines showed multiple engines shut down before the company confirmed it had lost contact with the ship. This happened last time, too The FAA said it had opened a mishap investigation into the incident, and would require SpaceX to examine the failures cause and get the agencys sign off before Starship can fly again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF-hjNFnO-I |

How Elon Musk Colonised a Corner of Texas to Build His Own Space City - Anywhere But Washington
How Elon Musks SpaceX May Take Over a Corner of The Texas Coast Starbase is where SpaceX researches, launches and tests rockets and it could soon become the newest town in America. The Guardian 23 MAY 2025 ![]() ![]() Some locals are worried about SpaceXs efforts to make a Starbase municipality. ![]() SpaceX is shooting for Mars, with Musks rocket company racing to bring humanity closer to being a multi-planetary species. Back on Earth, leader of Trumps DOGE is hoping he gets to start a government of its own in Texas. After fleeing Silicon Valley for political and business reasons, Elon Musk is building a corporate campus in rural Texas but his new neighbours have mixed views. Half an hour east of Austin, past the airport, the clogged up traffic starts to melt away and the plains of Central Texas open up, leaving the booming city behind. Somewhere along the main highway, a left turn takes drivers down Farm to Market Road 1209. It seems like an unlikely address for a high tech hub, but thats exactly what Musk, the worlds richest man and one of Donald Trumps closest allies, hopes it will become. Court filings indicate that a large metal building finished in the last few months will be the new headquarters of X, his social media platform. A short distance away, a large logo of the Boring Company, Musks infrastructure company, is plastered on the side of another headquarters. And across FM 1209 is a rapidly growing SpaceX facility which manufactures Starlink satellite internet equipment. Like most technology tycoons, Musk had long made Silicon Valley his home and headquarters. Once a supporter of the Democrats, his move to Texas is part of a larger tech world trend and also appears to reflect his own transformed ideological views. Here the land is relatively cheap, skilled tech workers from nearby Austin are plentiful, and local laws are favourable to development. Of course, there are also specific political angles to the move. In July 2024, Musk said he was quitting California after the state passed a law prohibiting teachers from enforcing rules about notifying families when students gender identity changes. Musk has an estranged transgender daughter and has spoken out against what he calls woke mind virus which he describes in interviews as divisive identity politics along with anti meritocratic and anti free speech ideas. ![]() Local officials and residents hope to keep the charm of Bastrops bustling and old fashioned downtown Musk upped sticks and headed to Texas, a Republican stronghold and the fastest growing state in the US. ![]() Alfonso Lopez, like many Bastrop residents, has a balanced view of Musk, his companies and their impact on the local area https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwxlYvRxzk4
