UK Water Companies Face £168MIL Fines Over SEWAGE Spills & WATER Supply

Ofwat has today (6 August 2024) proposed that three water companies will be fined a total of £168m for failing to manage their wastewater treatment works and networks, as part of the first batch of outcomes from its biggest ever investigation. The penalties proposed for consultation will see Thames Water fined £104m, Yorkshire Water fined £47m and Northumbrian Water fined £17m. Ofwat, which oversees the water sector in England and Wales, said Thames Water, Southern Water, SES Water and South East Water need to deliver a turnaround in their financial performance. Its latest yearly report revealed that four other firms are causing concern over their long-term finances. It comes as some £1.4BIL was paid out in dividends to shareholders in the latest year across all the firms monitored. The chief executive of South West Water's (SWW) parent company has forgone her annual performance bonus for the second year in a row. It comes amid anger over the company's response to the parasite outbreak in Devon. Susan Davy, who heads SWW owner Pennon Group, would have been in line for a bonus of £237,000 in 2023-24.
