Mummified Body of US Mountaineer Buried in Avalanche 22 Years Ago Discovered in The Andes
William Stampfl disappeared 22 years ago after he and two friends were struck by an avalanche on Mount Huascaran, Peru, with his body discovered this month as ice melting due to climate change MailOnline 10 JUL 2024 ![]() ![]() The mummified remains of a climber who vanished in the Andes more than two decades ago has been discovered buried beneath an avalanche. US mountaineer William Stampfl had been attempting to summit one of the South American range's highest peaks when he disappeared in June 2002. Aged 59 at the time, Mr Stampfl was with a two fellow climbers on Mount Huascaran when they were all killed by the avalanche. Friend Steve Erskine's body was found shortly after the tragedy, while Matthew Richardson's body sadly still remains missing. Search teams combed the mountain in a sadly fruitless rescue bid. But the 22-year search came to a conclusion last week after police in Peru confirmed his body had been discovered near a camp 17,060ft above sea level. It's thought Mr Stampfl's body was exposed as a result of ice melting due to climate change. Due to the freezing temperatures, his body had been preserved, while he was able to be identified immediately by his passport which was in his possession at the time. Mountain guides brought Mr Stampfl's body back down the mountain. Huascaran, in the Cordillera Blanca range of the western Andes is South America's fourth highest mountain at more than 6,700m above sea level. Hundreds scale the peak each year, although reaching the summit is estimated to take around a week with a guide. Last year, the mummified remains of a woman who disappeared in 1981 were also discovered in the Andes. Marta Emilia Altamirano, 20, tragically died during an expedition in March of that year, and was found in glacier ice on the Cerro Mercedario, the highest peak of the Cordillera de la Ramada range in January last year. |
