Thumbs Up Lions Rescued From Putins' Bombs Arrive in UK Wildlife Park

Lions Rescued From Vladimir Putins' Bombs Arrive in UK After 2,000 Mile Trek

Mum Aysa and her three cubs Emi, Santa and Teddi have completed the 2,000-mile trek across six countries from Ukraine to a new home - Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster

Daily Mirror 25 MAR 2024

A lioness and her three cubs have finally arrived in Britain after an ordeal that began in war-torn Ukraine. After nine months penned and unable to see the sky they were driven 2,000 miles from Poznan, Poland to their new home... AWWW...

As female cubs Emi, Santa and brother Teddi emerged from their crates, it was the first time they had seen grass, trees and birds since mum Aysa was saved from Russian bombs in Donetsk over a year ago.

Watching them, Bex Brown, 34, head of the carnivore section at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, said: “It’s incredible. This is what dreams are made of. As a child all you want is to help animals and now I’m part of this wonderful rescue."

Teddi was first out of his crate into the tunnel leading to a holding pen. Deputy head of carnivores Colin Northcott, who had visited the lions in Poznan, used the Polish word for ‘Come’ to urge him Teddi to move.

He didn’t need telling twice and sprinted into the holding pen where he hid in the straw. Emi and Santa needed a bit more persuading, taking five minutes and 20 minutes to emerge. At first all three huddled together but within minutes they began playing with logs in the pen.

Aysa, unloaded into a pen next door, was the most relaxed, instantly making herself at home, moving to the front of the pen and looking up at the sky. She also watched all the rangers and appeared to recognise Colin.

Pregnant Aysa had been rescued from a private zoo in Donetsk as Russian bombs rained down. She gained sanctuary, of a sort in Kyiv, where she had the cubs. The family was then moved to a zoo in Poznan, Poland, where they had to be separated after stressed Aysa hit out at one of her offspring in their cramped pen.

They had been living in adjacent 15ft-square concrete holding pens and it is thought the cubs had never had the chance to run free. It took seven months for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, based at Auckley, near Doncaster, to get permission to move them.

The Mirror was on hand to see them sedated, loaded into crates and sent on a 48-hour trip across six countries by lorry and ferry. It was night when they arrived in Yorkshire and deemed to dangerous to unload them in the dark. So they were introduce to their new home at dawn on Thursday.

Rangers at the wildlife park are already smitten with the four new arrivals. One worker pushing a wheelbarrow stopped to look at Asha and said: “You’re beautiful!”

The stunning lioness suffered alone, malnourished and surrounded by fighting and explosions until she was taken to a sanctuary near Kyiv where she gave birth in October 2022.

Watching her settle on Thursday, Colin said: “I’m over the moon, overjoyed they are finally here. And I am totally amazed at how quickly they’ve settled in. The cubs were playing with the logs together within minutes of being reunited.

“Now I can’t wait until they are settled enough to run around, walk on the grass and smell the fresh air. It’s overwhelming to finally have them here with us and the public are going to love them. This is a massive new world for them and it’s going to be really scary at first.

“Even the language they hear will be different. I’m trying to learn a few words in Polish to make them feel more at home. But I can’t wait for them now to run around playing, walking on grass for the first time, seeing the water and the sky. It will be incredible.

Teddi is released from his crate into his new enclosure in Yorkshire

“Poznan Zoo did an amazing thing rescuing them and they looked after them really well, they look so healthy and fit. But it pulled at my heartstrings seeing them unable to enjoy the fresh air and the outside world.

“The rangers over there were also really keen for them to get more space. It’s like she’s been here for years! She is such a sweetheart. Of the cubs, Santa is the largest and most dominant.

“I’m really happy with their condition and how calm they seem. I didn’t expect that at all. When I saw them in Poznan they were terrified.”

In Poznan, the traumatised cubs would hiss at strangers. They could hear their mum calling as she paced in the pen next door but couldn’t see her. In Yorkshire they will soon be reunited as their holding pens are separated by a panel that can be removed to reveal a mesh barrier.

Ultimately the rangers plan to release them into an eight-acre enclosure with its array of waterfalls and caves. Cheryl Willams, 61, co-founded Yorkshire Wildlife Park in 2008, with husband Nev, business partner John Minion and his father Stephen Minion. Their ambition was to create a zoo which was a “guilt-free” experience.
