Wild Side Vets have taken in the alligator snapping turtle who has been nicknamed 'Fluffy'

A dangerous alligator snapping turtle known to bite through bone, has been found in a lake in Cumbria — and given the nickname 'fluffy' by vets caring for it.

Parish Councillor Denise Chamberlain fished the dinosaur-like turtle out of a lake in Urswick Tarn, near Ulverston, on Monday, with a shopping basket.

Alligator snapping turtles are native to freshwater habitats of the United States, typically found in swamps and rivers in Florida, and have armour-like shells which gives them a prehistoric appearance.

They have a powerful enough jaw that they can snap through bone and should never be handled in the wild.

Ms Chamberlain, who has previously lived in Florida, saw a social media post about the turtle and 'immediately recognised' the species.

She went to retrieve the turtle with the help of residents and said she was 'anxious on two levels' — of losing a finger but also not knowing what to do with it after it was captured.

Ms Chamberlain bravely entered the water and used a shopping basket to retrieve the turtle.

The turtle was taken to Wild Side Vets, based at Barrow in Furness, where it is being cared for.

They nicknamed the turtle 'Fluffy', in spite of its appearance, and believe it was abandoned by its owner.

They said: 'If you are struggling to keep your reptile, please feel free to talk to us in confidence, no judgement and we will do our very best to help.

'Reptiles are very expensive and difficult to keep. We can house most species for short periods and we have lots of contacts up and down the country for rehoming.

'Please don’t abandon or keep any reptile in suboptimal conditions. We can help.'

Lots of people have offered to take 'Fluffy' in but it has been decided the reptile will be moved to a specialist wildlife centre in Cornwall.
