A British Covid scientist has died after falling in a cycling accident near Italy's Lake Garda.

Susannah Boddie, 27, was killed while cycling on a downhill trail in forest on the Brescia side of the lake on Friday morning. It's understood she was holidaying with her partner at the time, and sadly sustained catastrophic injuries after being thrown from her bike despite wearing a helmet.

The pair were on a cycling trip in Navazzo di Gargnano, a popular tourist spot near to the Italian lake. Paramedics were called to the scene and were tragically unable to save her.

Ms Boddie, who was lead health data scientist at Number 10 offering advice during the pandemic, had been on the final part of a tour of the Dolomites and was on a descent down a gravel path when she lost control of her bike and fell. Il Giorno reports her partner was also hospitalised in a state of shock.

Tributes have been paid to Ms Boddie, whose family describe her as being "the loveliest, kindest person" who would leave a huge hole in their lives. The family on Saturday said:“Susannah lived life to the full and had achieved so much in her short life. She crammed in more into her life than you would have thought possible.

“She was the loveliest, kindest person who always inspired and cared for others and was adored by all her many friends. She will leave the biggest hole in our family and that of Rob her much loved partner. She was the most wonderful daughter, sister, grandaughter and friend you could ever wish for and her memory will continue to inspire us in all we do.”

Both Susannah and Rob were reportedly experienced cyclists and had been due to fly back to the UK from nearby Verona this week. Authorities said an investigation was now underway.

A Downing Street spokeswoman told the Mirror:

“Susannah was an incredible scientist, an inspiring sportswoman, a loved and admired colleague and friend to those at No10 and many others within the civil service. Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for Italian police said: "I can confirm that a 27-year-old British woman has died after an accident while cycling near Lake Garda. The circumstances are still being investigated and officers are preparing a report.

"The woman's partner raised the alarm and he was taken to hospital but was not injured although very shocked. We are in the process of alerting the British authorities so next of kin can be informed."
