Rare ‘inspiring’ cloud formation looks like waves crashing across the horizon

A rare formation of clouds which may have inspired Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night has been spotted over Wyoming.

The ‘awe-inspiring’ cloud formation looked like a wave crashing across the horizon when it appeared above Bighorn Mountains, Sheridan, on Tuesday.

Locals rushed to take pictures of the clouds, an example of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability – a phenomenon that can occur in the air and, more commonly, in water.

A fast-moving layer of fluid or air ‘washes’ over a slower, thicker layer – which in turn drags the surface over the top before ‘breaking’.

Rachel Gordon, who took snaps from her parent’s home, told the BBC: ‘This was special and I immediately knew I needed to capture it.’
