During the Second World War, there were thousands of war crimes committed by many different armies. Some of the worst atrocities were conducted by the Japanese Army, and because of their actions its estimated that up to 12 million people were killed.

They carried out many executions, tortured many different individuals and also slaughtered scores of people. But following the Fall of Singapore, the Japanese took control of 80,000 Allied Prisoners of War, and many of these were forced to work in horrific conditions on the Burma Railway.

The Burma Railway was known as 'The Death Railway,' and thousands of Allied POWs were killed in the harsh conditions on the work project. POWs were underfed, and were starved and disease was rife, but one of the most shocking stories of the Burma Railway saw three Allied soldiers being crucified after being sentenced to death.

Ringer Edwards was the only one of the three crucified soldiers to survive the Japanese Army's execution, after he managed to free his hand after it was nailed through with wire. Many others also helped him to survive by passing him food, and after being crucified for 63 hours straight, he was finally let down.

The Japanese considered him broken and finished, but the other two men he was 'executed' along with were killed by their ordeal.
