Default re: Power of Prayer >No Matter Which Faith YouFollow=GOD is With You

Question: "Is being holy even possible, since only God is holy?"

Answer: Holiness is not only a possibility for the Christian; holiness is a requirement. “Without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). The difference between God and us is that He is inherently holy while we, on the other hand, only become holy in relationship to Christ and we only increase in practical holiness as we mature spiritually. The New Testament emphasizes the pursuit of holiness in this world and the final attainment of holiness in the world to come.

To be “holy” means that we are, first of all, “set apart for honorable use.” Whereas we were “once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures . . . God our Savior . . . saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:3-5; cf. 1 Corinthians 6:11). The Lord took the initiative to pull us out of our former lifestyles. He saved us, cleansed us, and set us apart for righteousness. If we have believed in Christ for salvation, we have been washed by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit and set apart from the world for godliness (see Romans 12:2).

However, the pursuit of holiness does not end when we come to Christ. In fact, it just begins! There is a positional holiness that we inherit at regeneration and a practical holiness which we must actively pursue. God expects us to cultivate a lifestyle of holiness (1 Peter 1:14-16) and commands us to “cleanse ourselves of all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1 NASB). Bringing holiness to “perfection” means that we should be increasing in spiritual fruitfulness every day. We are to consider ourselves “dead to sin” (Romans 6:11), refusing to revert back to our former lifestyles. In this way we “cleanse [ourselves] from what is dishonorable,” becoming vessels for “honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master . . . for every good work” (2 Timothy 2:21). Holiness is the mark of every true Christian (1 John 3:9-10).

Cultivating a lifestyle of holiness does not mean that we must draft a list of do’s and don’ts to live by. We are free from the letter of the law which kills (2 Corinthians 3:6) and now live according to the dictates of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-18).

We are told, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:12-13). In this verse, we see cooperation between God and His children in sanctification. We “work out” what God “works in” us, because God has a timeline for the virtues that He wishes to cultivate in our lives. Our responsibility is to yield to His wishes, “working out” with focused attention and great care those things that He is causing to grow in us. Holiness will not be brought to completion in our lives with no effort on our part. We are invited to participate in God’s work in us. We will not be “carried to the skies on flowery beds of ease,” as the old hymn says.

This is, perhaps, the most important lesson that we can learn as Christians. God’s ultimate desire for His people is that we be holy—conformed into the image of His Son, Jesus (Romans 8:29; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4). Holiness is the will of God for our lives.

Of course, the flesh is weak (Mark 14:38). None of us will reach sinless perfection in this world, but God has made provision for our sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Our pursuit of holiness in this world includes daily confessing and forsaking sin (see Hebrews 12:1-3).

God helps us in our weakness by giving us His Holy Spirit who reveals the mind of Christ to us and enables us to carry out His will (1 Corinthians 2:14-16; Philippians 2:13). When we yield to the Spirit, we become fruit-bearing Christians, yielding a harvest with which God is well pleased (Galatians 5:22-23). On the other hand, when we suppress the work of the Holy Spirit by rebelling against His will for us, we stifle the design of God, sabotage our own spiritual growth, and grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30).

If God was gracious enough to redeem us from sin and death and give us new life in Christ, the very least that we can do is offer our lives back to Him in complete surrender and holiness, which is for our benefit (cf. Deuteronomy 10:13). Because of God’s mercies, we should be living sacrifices, “holy and pleasing to God” (Romans 12:1; cf. Deuteronomy 10:13). One day, in heaven, we will be free from sin and all its effects. Until then, we “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” and keep running our race (Hebrews 12:2).

Whatever Happened to the Lord’s Day?
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Sundays used to be the day set aside as the Lord’s Day, a day to worship God and rest from all other activities. Today, however, Sunday is no longer a hallowed day. Sadly, many Christians no longer look on Sunday as a day to prioritize Christian activities. Millions of believers can be seen heading for their family hideaway — a cabin in the mountains, a house in the country, a chalet at the lake. For them, Sunday is one big play day of boating, swimming, skiing, going on cruises or outings.

What does the Lord have to say about the Sabbath? Well, in one place, Moses said, “The Lord has given you the Sabbath … so the people rested on the seventh day” (Exodus 16:29-30). In other words, the Sabbath was meant as a gift from God to man — and it had a holy purpose. You see, sabbath means, literally, “to cease,” or, “to stop what you’re doing.” And the fourth commandment tells us, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8).

The Bible describes it this way: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work …for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lords blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:9-11).

What does it mean to keep the Sabbath holy? If it is not just a matter of legalistic obedience, and is rather a spiritual observance, then what must we do?

It definitely involves rest — physical rest — but there’s a holy rest that begins in the soul: “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:9). What is this rest? It is the laying of all our sin-burdens on Christ! God calls us to live all our days free of fear, worry and anxiety — to walk in the Spirit, with no more heavy burdens.

Beloved, rejoice over your position in Christ and let every day be a day of Sabbath as you honor him.

Subject to Bad Days
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Jesus is faithful and caring through every season of our life, and he is touched by every feeling we endure during our hard times. The apostle Paul addresses this when he writes, “We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). The treasure Paul refers to is the knowledge and presence of Jesus Christ — and we hold this precious treasure in our bodies. Just imagine! Yet the Greek word Paul uses for “earthen” is “frail clay” meaning, “weak, easily broken, and easily tempted.”

Paul speaks of Timothy’s “frequent infirmities” in 1 Timothy 5:23. The Greek word for “infirmity” here means “sickly, without strength, feeble of body or mind.” There are other kinds of infirmities besides physical ones and they are just as difficult to handle. Infirmities of the mind are probably the most widespread — those times when your feelings betray you and play tricks on your mind. Let me explain.

You may go to bed feeling content and peaceful, yet wake up with a heavy cloud of gloom hanging over your head. You go through the day downcast and disheartened, unable to shake the negative feelings. Guilt, fear and anxiety are also infirmities of the mind and may haunt you because of your past.

So, how can we be full of “knowledge and the presence of Jesus” and also subject to bad days, feelings of failure, weakness, frailties? It’s because we still dwell in our physical bodies, subject to “infirmities” and temptations of all kinds, both mental and physical.

Ironically, some of our most intense testing may come when we are searching God’s Word. Or interceding for lost souls. It’s easy to get frustrated when we look at others and wonder why we can’t triumph like they seem to be doing. But you are not unspiritual because you experience bad days. You are the child of your heavenly Father and he sends the Holy Spirit to chase away your doubts. The Word says, “Not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:9).

You cannot fight the enemy on your own but you have this great treasure present in you, so run to your heavenly Father. Then stand still, with patience and hope!

OUR PRESENT FEARS

David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

* Editor's Note: Given the widespread news regarding the Coronavirus, this timely devotional is a reminder that when our hearts want to fear, God is with us.

As the world becomes increasingly violent, decadent, and uncertain, some Christians struggle to keep fear out of their hearts. They sense intuitively that conditions in the world are disintegrating, and some kind of ominous disaster may be looming on the horizon. As they hear all the terrible reports of what’s happening in America and around the globe, they struggle to rest in the promise of God’s keeping power.

The fact is, no matter how righteous we may be, and no matter how strong our faith is, all these frightful uncertainties cannot help but affect our human emotions. It’s all rather scary, for sure. But for the overcoming Christians whose sins are covered by the blood of Jesus, there is very good news. And if we keep our eyes focused on this good news, meditating on it night and day, no evil report will ever faze us. This news may seem a bit bizarre to you but God’s Word declares very clearly, “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

How could this possibly be good news? Well, I’m convinced that just one moment into eternity, we are all going to realize how unimportant and fleeting our present fears and trials have been. We’ll also see just how present the Lord has been with us the entire time, watching over us with his saving and keeping power. As scripture testifies, our lives here on earth are like grass: one day we’re here, growing and thriving, and the next day we’re fading away with the season. “As for man, his days are like grass” (Psalm 103:15).

We’re like the vapor of breath we see on a frosty day — here one moment, gone the next. “You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14).

Brother, sister, rejoice! This present life is not reality. Our reality is eternal life in the presence of our blessed Lord. So, keep the faith — because things are winding down but we are going up! AMEN

Hard Times Reveal Our Heart
Gary Wilkerson

Consider what “normal” Christianity looks like today in the typical believer. This person is a bit self-seeking, a little materialistic, somewhat consumerist. Most of his daily choices are about improving his life. That includes his spiritual pursuits; from his church groups to the podcasts he downloads to the seminars he attends.

There’s nothing wrong with any of these things. Our Lord wants our lives to be blessed. But for some Christians these are nothing more than worldly pursuits. They’re about self-improvement, not the kingdom of God. And they can drain a believer of true gospel power.

Whatever happened to a life of total surrender to Jesus? What happened to being willing to lay down our lives for the gospel’s sake? Paul said of his own testimony, “My speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (1 Corinthians 2:4). If we aren’t living a life empowered by God, we can’t blame the Lord. It isn’t because his grace lacks power. The problem is with us.

It is vital that the hearts of Christians be truly prepared to deal with hard things in life. Paul said, “Understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless … not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

Paul is speaking here of dedicated churchgoers but describes them as having only a form of godliness. He says further that these Christians were “always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth” (3:7). When Paul said in verse one that times of difficulty would come in the last days, he makes it clear that “normal” Christianity won’t be sustainable. Hard times reveal the condition of our hearts and God wants us to be filled with Holy Spirit power.

Are you hearing God’s Word preached but not walking out what you hear? If you want to see his power released in your life anew today, determine in your heart that you are going to pursue God with intensity and follow him with total dedication.

What Moses Knew About Guidance
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Moses was convinced that without God’s presence in his life, it was useless for him to attempt anything. When he spoke face to face with the Lord, he said, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here” (Exodus 33:15). He was saying, “Lord, if your presence is not with me, then I’m not going anywhere. I won’t take a single step unless I’m assured that you’re beside me!”

Moses knew that God’s presence in Israel was what set the people apart from all other nations. And the same is true in the church of Jesus Christ today. The only thing that sets us apart from nonbelievers is God’s presence — leading us, guiding us, working his will in and through us.

Moses was not concerned about how other nations received their guidance, formed their strategies, ran their governments or directed their armies. His philosophy was, “We operate on one principle alone. The only way for us to be guided or governed, to make war and survive in this wasteland, is to have the presence of God with us!”

God answered Moses’ bold statement in this way: “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (33:14). What an incredible promise! The Hebrew word for “rest” here means “a comfortable, quiet repose.” God is saying, “No matter what enemies or trials you face, you’ll always be able to find a quiet rest in me.”

A church body that has God’s presence in its midst will live, move and worship in a quiet confidence in the Lord at all times. The same is true for every individual Christian. If you have the presence of Jesus in your life, you will experience God’s divine order. You’ll have a peace and a calm, with no fretting or anxiety, no running to and fro seeking guidance, no sense that the bottom is falling out. What a wonderful way to live!

National Day of Prayer for Coronavirus

https://www.frc.org/pray

Here are some ways you can prayerfully respond to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19):

Pray for an end to the virus’ spread. The Coronavirus did not take God by surprise; He is still governing and sustaining the world (Col. 1:17). Pray for God’s healing mercy and that He would graciously bring this pandemic to an end. Pray for healing for all those affected by the virus.
Pray for government leaders. At all times, Christians are called to pray for those in positions of authority (1 Tim. 2:2). This is especially true during a time of national emergency. Pray for the President, Vice President, governors, mayors, and all those making decisions related to public health and safety. Pray for a spirit of bipartisanship as lawmakers work together to protect people.
Pray for church leaders. Pastors around the country are making difficult decisions related to public worship and the safety of their members. Pray that pastors will have wisdom to faithfully shepherd the congregations under their care, even if they are unable to physically gather (1 Peter 5:2). Pray that Christians will love their neighbors well during this time (Mark 12:31).
Pray for the vulnerable. Authorities tell us that those immunocompromised people are especially at risk as the virus spreads. Pray for protection for the elderly, diseased, and those facing financial hardship. Pray for students who are being required to vacate university and college housing with very little notice. Over the next few weeks, there will be many opportunities to meet tangible needs. Pray that God’s people meet these opportunities with wisdom and grace (Mat. 25:35-40).
Pray for honest reporting. Christians should pray for those in the news media. Pray that reporters and journalists would accurately report updates about the status of the virus, and not seek to peddle conspiracies, politicize the threat, or stoke fear where it is unwarranted.
Pray for a spirit of generosity. During this time, churches will face a loss of income at a time when there are many opportunities to meet physical needs. Pray that God’s people will manifest a spirit of generosity and sacrificially give of their time and resources to meet needs that will arise (2 Cor. 9:6-8).
Pray for a posture of trust. Scripture teaches us that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control (2 Tim 1:7). Pray for enduring faith during this season of heightened fear, anxiety, and confusion. Appropriate precautions should be taken, but Christians must continue to rely on God and trust His purposes and plans (Rom. 8:28).
Pray for the spread of the gospel. In this time of great anxiety, pray that God’s people would be ready to meet the world with the comfort and hope that only the good news of Jesus Christ can offer.

God Given Grace to Stand
Gary Wilkerson

For the first time in history, less than 50 percent of Americans identify themselves as believers of any kind. That figure is even lower — 30 percent — for those under thirty. Many of these check “NONE” as their religious affiliation. It is estimated that within a decade this generation will be lost completely to secularism and godlessness. And tolerance for Christians will only decrease.

What are we to do with this information? The writer of Hebrews answers, “Recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings” (Hebrews 10:32).

God turned the suffering of those early Christians into tools for gospel power: “Sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction … you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, ‘Yet a little while, and the coming one will come … but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.’ But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls” (10:33-39).

Although this seems to be a hard passage, there is good news embedded here. It speaks of a time when things get so bad that believers are tempted to shrink back from their message. Yet “we are not of those who shrink back … but of those who … preserve their souls” (10:39).

We may never face the same trials that New Testament believers did, but God still gives us New Testament power. Surely we will face trials of our own because we’re not immune to what is coming in the world. But those hardships will produce in us a power we’ve never seen.

The nonbelievers referenced above represent a soul headed to hell, someone for whom Jesus died. Those numbers alone call us to rise above mediocre Christianity to proclaim the gospel without fear or hindrance.

Christ’s great power is endued by grace alone and it is free to all who believe. May you be a testimony of his grace and power to all those in your sphere of influence today.

The Origin of True Worship
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Understanding God’s glory has very real, practical value for every true believer. Grasping it can unlock the door to an overcoming life!

The glory of God is a revelation of our Lord’s nature and being. We know Moses received a literal glimpse of God’s glory. God took him aside into the cleft of a rock and, scripture says, he revealed himself to Moses in all his glory: “The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exodus 34:6-7).

Often when we think about the glory of God, we think of his majesty and splendor, his power and dominion. But the way God wants us to know his glory is through the revelation of his great love toward all men. That’s what he revealed to Moses. The Lord is forever waiting to show us his love to forgive us, shower us with his mercy, and restore us to himself!

This revelation of God’s glory has powerful effects on those who receive it and pray to understand it. At the first sight of his glory, Moses was no longer fearful of the Lord. Instead, he was moved to worship: “Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped” (34:8). He saw that God’s nature was one of kindness and tender mercy — total love!

True worship arises from hearts that are overcome by a vision of God’s unmerited love for us. It is based on the revelation that God gives us of himself, of his goodness, his mercy, his readiness to forgive. If we are to praise God both in spirit and in truth, our worship must be based on this awesome truth about him.

Seeing God’s glory changes the way we live! Each new revelation of his love and mercy brings supernatural change and makes us more like him. It also changes our relationships with others. “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32). Just like Paul told the Ephesian church then, it holds true today: We’ve seen and tasted the glory of God. Now, let’s be a reflection of that glory to others.

The Unchanging Love of God
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Communion with God consists of two things: receiving the love of the Father and loving him in return. You might spend hours each day in prayer, telling the Lord how much you love him, but it isn’t communion unless you receive his love in return.

The psalmist encourages us to “enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4). Why are we given such a bold invitation and what is the reason for such thanksgiving and praise? It’s because we are shown the kind of God we are to come to: “For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations” (100:5).

God does not come to us as a hard, demanding father. Rather, he is kind and tenderhearted, filled with love and mercy toward us. His love is unconditional and he will never turn us down when we call upon him. He cares about everything concerning us but too few Christians have laid hold of this amazing love and grace. They live in fear and doubt, with little or no hope.

True love is manifested in two things: rest and rejoicing. The prophet Zephaniah writes: “The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).

God rests in his love for his people. In Hebrew, the phrase “He will quiet you with His love” reads, “He shall be silent because of his love.” God is saying, in essence, “I’ve found my true love and I don’t have to look elsewhere.”

God gets great pleasure from his people. Zephaniah testifies that God’s love for you is so great that it puts a song on his lips! To “rejoice” means to have joy and delight; it’s an outward expression of internal gladness. It’s also the highest expression of love.

God foresaw all your sins and failures, yet he still loved you with tender love. If God loved you enough to give his own Son to die for you when you were still deep in sin, would he remove his love when you stumble or fail? Absolutely not! His love is glorious and steadfast — unchanging and eternal.

Lifted Out of the Pit
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Discouragement is the devil’s most devastating tool in his attacks on Spirit-hungry saints. It has always been the enemy’s weapon of choice against God’s elect, and from the day you became serious about the things of God — determining in your heart to know Christ in his fullness — Satan has sought to discourage you. He has watched you dig deeper into God’s Word every day. He has seen you growing, changing, overcoming all worldliness, and he has made you a heavy target.

Right now you may be able to praise God loudly in church but watch out for what comes tomorrow. Satan will use his most powerful weapon to try to bring you down, so don’t think his attacks are unusual. God allows this type of fiery testing with all his saints. Peter writes, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you” (1 Peter 4:12). God’s people have been enduring discouragement for centuries.

When you’re under attack, you won’t feel like praying but you must still go to the secret place and into the presence of Jesus! Don’t try to pray your way out of despair — this is the time for God’s Spirit to go to work for you. He will lift you out of the pit!

You can be honest with the Lord and tell him how weak and helpless you feel. “Jesus, my spirit is dry and I have no strength left. I’m coming to you for help!” In such times, the Lord is very patient with us. He doesn’t expect us to exert some intense, fervent effort in prayer, so just sit in his presence and trust his Holy Spirit to do in you what he has been sent to do. He will never forsake you but you must give him time to do his work.

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Dare to believe the incredibly good things the Holy Spirit is going to tell you. The Lord has glorious promises for all who wait on him!

Lockdown

Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.

But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.

They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.

They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighborhood so that the elders may have someone to call on.

Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbors in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.

So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.

Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.
Praise the Lord......

When God Changes Your Plans
Carter Conlon

Good ideas are not always “God ideas.” We see this in the life of the apostle Paul: “Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them” (Acts 16:6-7).

Just as it happened with Paul, a sincere disciple of Christ, it can happen with all of us. We may want to go certain places and do certain things, expecting God to go with us. However, sometimes the pathways we choose for our lives during a particular season may not actually be the pathway of God for us.

Paul had a vision of a man appealing to him to come to Macedonia and help them (16:9). “Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them” (16:10). So, although Paul had had different plans, he and his company headed off to Macedonia. On the way they ministered to a group of women meeting for prayer. One of them was an influential part of the community and “she and her household were baptized” (16:15).

Next, they encountered a demon-possessed slave girl and when she was delivered, her masters seized Paul and Silas and had them beaten and thrown into prison (16:22). This serves as a reminder that we have no guarantee that we will get a pass through trials and trouble. In fact, sometimes obeying the will of God will actually get us into trouble. But God’s plans are always far superior to our own.

In prison, Paul and Silas sang praises to the Lord and witnessed to the jailer, who in turn was transformed and baptized along with his entire family (16:33). And just think, all this started with a man appearing to Paul when he was praying at night, saying, “Come and help us.”

The power of God is always found where the Spirit leads you. Today I implore you to have the courage to say, “Lord, I do not want to live simply for my will. What would you have me do? Where do you want me to go? Let your will be done in my life.” Then watch God do miracles!

All Out War on God’s Children
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time” (Revelation 12:12).

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to constantly be aware that the devil is out to destroy us. Therefore, Paul says, we need to know as much as we can about the enemy's tactics and plans: “Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11).

The verse in Revelation tells us that Satan has declared all-out war on God’s children — and he has a deadline to complete his work. While many Christians may slumber at the midnight hour, just as Jesus predicted, the devil is working ferociously, making preparation for war. He is keenly aware of the short time he has to accomplish his evil purposes, so he is always scheming, ever devising ways to harass and destroy the church of Jesus Christ.

Satan may lie to you and give you no rest from his accusations. Jesus now sits safely with the Father, well beyond Satan’s reach, but the enemy is still waging war against Christ by directing it against believers — Christ’s seed.

Contrary to the thinking of some Christians, Satan doesn’t possess omnipotent power; he has been defeated by Jesus and stripped of all authority. Neither is he omniscient (meaning, he can’t read minds). And he isn’t omnipresent. But he does have principalities and powers stationed throughout the earth and his host of demons feed him intelligence at his beck and call.

Peter gives us this warning: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Satan knows your weak spots, your struggles with the flesh, and he’ll work hard on you in those areas. He will try to convince you that you’ll never be free from sin, but the instant you move toward Jesus the devil is rendered helpless. James tells us, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

So, how do you resist the enemy? You do it by faith alone! Simply come to Jesus, trusting he'll rescue you from Satan's clutches.

Through the Valley

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
—Psalm 23:4

Have you ever gone through a spiritual valley in your life? Perhaps it was a time when unexpected circumstances suddenly came crashing down on you. Perhaps it was a time when it seemed as though even God himself had abandoned you.

In Psalm 23, David speaks of how God is with us, even when we go through valleys in our lives: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (verse 4 NKJV).

David was no stranger to calamity and hardship. This was a man who knew what it was like to suffer. He knew what it was like to face difficulties. He had been hunted like a wild animal by the paranoid King Saul, even after being anointed as the next king of Israel by the prophet Samuel.

When David brings us this and other psalms, which he penned under the direction of the Holy Spirit, he candidly speaks of his own shortcomings, weaknesses, and questions he faced in life. Psalm 23 came from the school of hard knocks, from a man who knew what it was like to need God’s help.

But we might say, “A valley? I don’t like valleys, Lord. I prefer mountaintops, okay? I like the sun to be shining and the birds singing. I like good times. I don’t want friction. I don’t want hardship.”

Yet the Lord is saying, “You see that mountaintop in the distance? The way to that mountaintop is through this valley. You come with Me now through the valley.”

We all go through those valleys in life, those hard times. Whatever valley it is, remember this: You are not alone. That is God’s great promise to the believer.

Intercessions in Time of Crisis(from TheMoravian Book of Worship, pp. 117-118)

God of mercy, God of comfort, we come before You in this time of difficulty, mindful of human frailty and need, confused and struggling to find meaning in the face of suffering. We are grateful that even as we share in the joy of Christ Jesus, we can also share abundantly in comfort in the midst of suffering. For victims of fire or flood, storm or earthquake, famine or disease,For those whom disaster has left homeless, injured, or bereaved,For refugees and those separated from loved ones,(The liturgist may add specific petitions relating to the immediate crisis.)For all who are in danger, trouble, or anguish,We ask the presence and strength of Your Spirit.Give to all who suffer the love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. We know that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because Your love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.Be the supporter of all who give their strength, their skill, and their stamina in a ministry of mercy.Open our hearts in generosity that we may be partners in their commitment to bring relief.Where tempers flare and a partisan spirit provokes new hostility, raise up people who have patience and restraint.Where indifference allows crisis to deepen and suffering to go without relief, awaken deliverers who have zeal and strength. We pray for those who are engaged in making important decisions in this time, for those who report on these events, and for those who shape public opinion.
Give them courage to speak out and the restraint to listen, that together we may discern the truth and hold aloft its light.Take away the temptation to trust in human power and military solutions,a nd give them courage to be Your servants to the community of nations.Direct all governments in the way of peace and justice, that Your will may be known and done among the nations. Deliver us from the sins which lead to war and conflict, and strengthen within us the will to establish righteousness and justice on theearth. We pray for those who are suffering and can make no sense of tragedy.Help them to turn to the One who embraces us in our lives –even Jesus Christ, who lived and suffered among us.There is no one who is righteous, not even one, for we have all turned away from you. Make us aware of our common need of a Savior, and remove from our hearts the pride, ambition, and greed that would lead us to enslave and demean other people.Have mercy on your whole creation. Hasten the day when the kingdom of the world shall become your Kingdom, and by grace make us worthy to stand before You. Amen

The Remedy for Complaining
Jim Cymbala

When Christians experience joy today, it has a much more powerful impact on the world than it did decades ago. Why? Because the entitlement mentality so prevalent in our society leads many to feel justified in their anger. We may think, “The government, my employer, my family — someone for sure! — owes me big-time. I’m entitled because my life has been hard. You have no idea what I’ve been through.” There is often a deep resentment in that kind of complaint.

If you carefully analyze international affairs, national politics, call-in radio shows, blogs, labor disputes, and race relations, you find a worldwide epidemic of venom and bitterness. It’s everywhere and, sadly, it has also invaded the Body of Christ. It is the exact opposite of the joyous living that Jesus intended for all of us. “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11).

Centuries before Jesus said those words, joy was already understood as an important facet in the life of God’s chosen people. Moses instructed them that the blessings of God were granted so that “your joy will be complete” (Deuteronomy 16:15). Enjoying God’s presence produced an even deeper joy than any material blessing (Psalm 21:6), and God’s people were to continually celebrate his goodness with “songs of joy” (Psalm 107:22).

When singing a song of joy, it wasn’t only the lyrics or melody that made the song worshipful; the singers needed a heart of joy for all that the Lord had done for them. God was more interested in joyful hearts than vocal ability — that’s why David’s attitude pleased God so much. Although surrounded by enemies and under intense stress, David didn’t complain or get bitter. Rather, he went to the tabernacle and made sacrifices with “shouts of joy,” saying, “I will sing and make music to the Lord” (Psalm 27:6).

We Christians have been forgiven, cleansed, justified, and sealed with the Spirit — and we will live eternally with Christ! Joyous singing, shouts of praise, and exuberant thanksgiving are certainly in order. Although there is a time to “be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), we should also remember to “sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob” (Psalm 81:1).

Dear Lord,

We're still hoping we'll wake up. We're still hoping we'll open a sleepy
eye and think, What a horrible dream. How could this have happened?

Just a moment ago moms were packing school lunches. Just a moment ago
chefs were planning the day’s menu. Just a moment ago arenas were noisy,
brides were walking down the aisle, and neighbors were discussing the
weather.

In just a moment, everything changed. A phantom disease invaded our peace,
our plans, and our security. In a heartbeat our language and behaviors
were upended. Even young children understand the term “social distancing,”
“quarantine,” and “Covid-19.” Grandma isn’t allowed visitors in her
nursing home. Workers are telecommuting, zooming, and skyping in their
baseball caps and slippers. Handshakes and hugs have been put on indefinite
hold.

This strange season has introduced a level of fear we haven’t seen since
9/11. Fear of what might come. Fear of touching. Fear of exposure. Fear of
what we can’t see.

We are anxious, Father. And so we come to you. We don't ask you for help;
we beg you for it. We don't request; we implore. We know what you can do.
We've read the accounts. We've pondered the stories and now we plead, “Do
it again, Lord. Do it again.”

Remember Joseph? You rescued him from the pit. You can do the same for us.
Do it again, Lord.

Remember the Hebrews in Egypt? You protected their children from the angel
of death. We have children, too, Lord. Do it again.

And Sarah? Remember her prayers? You heard them. Joshua? Remember his
fears? You inspired him. The women at the tomb? You resurrected their hope.
The doubts of Thomas? You took them away. Do it again, Lord. Do it again.

You changed Daniel from a captive into a king's counselor. You took Peter
the fisherman and made him Peter an apostle. Because of you, David went
from leading sheep to leading armies. Do it again, Lord, for we need
counselors today, Lord. We need apostles. We need leaders. Do it again,
dear Lord.

What we’re seeing on the news, you saw on that Friday so long ago.
Innocence interrupted. Goodness suffering. Mothers weeping. Just as the
darkness fell on your Son, we fear the darkness falling on our friends, our
family, our world. Just as our world has been shaken by a disease, our
world was shaken the day the very child of Eternity was pierced.

You saw it. But you did not waver, O Lord. You did not waver. After your
Son’s three days in a dark hole, you rolled the rock and rumbled the earth
and turned the darkest Friday into the brightest Sunday. Do it again, Lord.
Grant us another Easter.

We thank you, dear Father, for these hours of unity. Selfless acts of
service and kindness warm our hearts. Strangers see opportunities to share
with others. Our medical warriors are working together, at personal risk,
to care for the rest of us. We thank you for their remarkable commitment.

And we see the world turning to you, Father. People encouraging people
with scriptures and reminders of your sovereignty. We read posts urging us
to respect each other, care for each other, and look up. We confess we have
been anxious, but because of you, we have hope.

We ask, Father: let your mercy be upon all who suffer. Grant to those who
lead us wisdom beyond their years and experience. Have mercy upon the
souls who have been hurt by this disease. Give us grace to help each other
and faith that we might believe.

And look kindly upon your church. For two thousand years you've used her to
heal a hurting world.

Do it again, Lord. Do it again.

Through Christ, Amen.

Delving Deeper into God’s Love for You
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 20-21). The Bible is filled with the truth of God’s love but at times we may wonder how the Lord could ever love us.

Millions of believers who have tasted the love of God have never learned how to enter into the fullness of his love. They know the doctrine of his love — they have heard it preached often — yet they don’t know what it means to be kept in his love.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The revelation of God’s love comes in part through the power of the Holy Spirit when we are born again. It’s a wonderful moment when you grasp this truth and realize, “God loved me when I was lost, undone, a stranger, and he proved his love by sacrificing his own Son on my behalf.”

After this initial revelation, Christians must learn how to be kept in God’s love. The Father loves his people with the very same love he has for Jesus, who sits at his right hand. In his final prayer on earth, Jesus said, “You loved Me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24). What an incredible thought! Christ was greatly loved by the Father before creation — before any planet was formed, before the sun, moon or stars came into being, before the creation of man.

Jesus then followed with this remarkable prayer: “That the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (17:26). He was saying, “Father, I know you’re going to love those I bring into my body just the way you’ve loved me.” You see, according to Jesus, in God’s eyes Christ and his Church are one.

Keep yourself in God’s great love for you and it will be your strength through all the things you experience in life. AMEN

5 Allegedly Genuine Angel Encounters That Changed People's Lives

The Paranormal Scholar •10 Apr 2020

For centuries, angels have been described as supernatural beings able to mediate between humanity and the heavens. As divine messengers, they are said to have been present at major events in human history, bringing news of good tidings, or even warning mankind of impending disaster.

It is to them that man prays during times of hardship. It is also by their hands that God’s will is delivered.

In modern times, as many as eighty percent of people believe angels are real - with many claiming that their lives were forever changed after encountering them.

Hymns for Good Friday

Upon the cross of Jesus,
my eye by faith can see
the very dying form of one
who suffered there for me.
And from my contrite heart, with tears,
two wonders I confess:
the wonder of his glorious love
and my unworthiness.

Lord of life! Now sweetly slumber,
with the dead awhile a guest;
after torments without number,
glorious is your hard-earned rest;
Lo! The dreadful conflict’s ended;
by your sufferings you have won;
over all your power’s extended;
take my heart, O claim your own.

O, what love is here displayed!
See the Father’s only son
to the silent tomb conveyed;
Ah, my soul, what have you done!
Yet, while I, my sins bewailing,
own that they his blood have spilt,
may that blood, for me prevailing,
wash away my sins and guilt.

The Easter Morning Service

of the Moravian Church

Friedberg Moravian Church 2178 Friedberg Church Road Winston-Salem, NC 27127

Minister—The Lord is risen! Response—The Lord is risen indeed!
(All hymns of the service shall be sung by the choir and congregation.)

Hail, all hail, victorious Lord and Savior, Thou hast burst the bonds of death; Grant us, as to Mary, the great favor
To embrace Thy feet in faith;
Thou hast in our stead the curse endured, And for us eternal life procured;
Joyful, we with one accord Hail Thee as our risen Lord.

T. Covenant (185 A)

I believe in the One only God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Who created all things by Jesus Christ, and was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself. I believe in God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world; Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son; Who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places in Christ; Who has made us worthy to share in the inheritance of the saints in light, having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He has made us accepted in the Beloved.

This I verily believe.

We thank Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Thy sight. Father, glorify Thy name.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

I believe in the name of the only-begotten Son of God, by Whom are all things, and we through Him. I believe that He was made flesh, and dwelt among us; and took on Himself the form of a servant; By the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit was conceived of the Virgin Mary; as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself took part of the same; was born of a woman; and being found in fashion as a man, was tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin.

For He is the Lord, the Messenger of the covenant, in Whom we delight. The Lord and His Spirit have sent Him to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. He spoke that which He knew, and testified to that which He had seen. As many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the children of God.

Behold the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; Went also by the Spirit and preached unto the spirits in prison; The third day rose again from the dead, and with Him many bodies of the saints who slept; Ascended into heaven, and sits on the throne of the Father; whence He will come in like manner as He was seen going into heaven.

The Spirit and the Bride
“O come!” are now entreating;
Let all who hear their voice
O come!” be loud repeating:
Amen! Lord Jesus, come; We wait in faith for Thee;
Soon, we implore Thee, come, Thy glory let us see.

T. Nun danket (146 A)

The Lord will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, to judge both the living and the dead. This is my Lord, Who redeemed me, a lost and undone human creature, purchased and gained me from sin, from death, and from the power of the devil; Not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood, and with His innocent suffering and dying; To the end that I should be His own, and in His kingdom live under Him and serve Him in eternal righteousness, innocence, and happiness; Even as He, being risen from the dead, lives and reigns, world without end.

This I verily believe.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst come at the first in great humility as our Redeemer, grant, we pray Thee, that when Thou shalt come again in glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may be accounted worthy to stand before Thee.

Hear us, gracious Lord and God.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, Who proceeds from the Father, and Whom our Lord Jesus Christ sent, after He went away, that He should abide with us forever; That He should comfort us, as a mother comforts her children; That He should help our infirmities, and make intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered; That He should bear witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God, and teach us to cry, Abba, Father; That He should shed abroad in our hearts the love of God, and make our bodies His holy temple; And that He should work in us the will of God, dividing His gifts to each one even as He will.

I believe that by my own reason and strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord, or come to Him; But that the Holy Spirit calls me by the gospel, enlightens me with His gifts, sanctifies and preserves me in the true faith; even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Church on earth, which He keeps by Jesus Christ in the only true faith; In which Christian Church, God forgives me and every believer all sin daily and abundantly.

This I verily believe.

O Spirit of grace, direct our hearts into the love of God, and into patient waiting for Christ. Establish Thou us in the faith, that we may abound therein with thanksgiving, and seal our hearts unto the day of redemption.

To Thee be glory, with the Father, and with the Son. Amen.

I believe that by holy baptism I am embodied a member of the Church of Christ, which He has loved, and for which He gave Himself, that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

In this communion of saints my faith is placed upon my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Who died for me, and shed His blood on the cross for the remission of sins, and Who has granted unto me His body and blood in the Lord’s Supper, as a pledge of grace; as the Scripture says, Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread, and, when He had given thanks, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. After the same manner also, our Lord Jesus Christ took the cup, when He had supped, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you; this is My blood, the blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.

This I verily believe.

Lord, Thy body ne’er forsake, Ne’er Thy congregation leave; We to Thee our refuge take, Of Thy fullness we receive; Every other help be gone, Thou art our support alone;
For on Thy supreme commands All the universe depends.

T. Goudimel (205 A)

(At this point, the service at the church has been concluded. The congregation will proceed across the road to the graveyard. The procession is led by the oldest male member of the Friedberg Congregation, accompanied by the Pastors, Vice-Chair of the Board of Elders, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Head Usher and members of the Church Choir.)

(When all have assembled on the graveyard, the band will play the Creation Hymn. The congregation stands in silent contemplation of the beauty of God’s creation and the joyous news of Christ’s resurrection. If you would like to reflect on the words of this beautiful hymn, they are printed below.)

The heavens are telling the Lord’s endless glory,
Through all the earth His praise is found.
The seas re-echo the marvelous story: Let all repeat that glorious sound!
The starry hosts He doth order and number,
He fills the morning’s golden springs,

Creation Hymn

He wakes the sun from his night-curtained slumber;
Let all adore the King of kings!

The graves of all His saints Christ blest, And softened every bed;
Where should the dying members rest, But with the dying Head?

Thence He arose, no more to die, And showed our feet the way
To follow Him, enthroned on high,
At the great rising day.

Then let the last loud trumpet sound, And bid our kindred rise;
Awake, ye nations under ground, Ye saints, ascend the skies.

T. Bedford (14 C)

I have a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, which is far better; I shall never taste death; yea, I shall attain unto the resurrection of the dead; for this perishable body must put on an imperishable form and this dying body a deathless form; my flesh shall rest in hope.

And the God of peace, Who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, shall also quicken these our mortal bodies, if the Spirit of God has dwelt in them.

We poor sinners pray: Hear us, gracious Lord and God.

Keep us in everlasting fellowship with those of our brethren and sisters who, since last Easter Day, have entered in to the joy of theirLord:

(The minister reads the names of the members of the Friedberg congregation who have passed away since the previous Easter.)

And with the whole Church Triumphant, and let us rest together in Thy presence from our labors.

Hear us, gracious Lord and God.

Who are these in brightarray, This innumerable throng, Round the altar night and day, Hymning one triumphant song:
“Worthy is the Lamb onceslain, Blessing, honor, glory, power,
Wisdom, riches to obtain,
New dominion every hour”?

T. Goudimel (205 A)

These through fiery trials trod, These from great affliction came; Now, before the throne of God, Sealed with His almighty Name, Clad in raiment pure and white, Victor-palms in every hand,
Through their dear Redeemer’s might,
More than conquerors they stand.

Glory be to Him Who is the Resurrection and the Life; He was dead, and behold, He is alive forevermore; and he who believes in Him, though he were dead, yet shall he live.

Glory be to Him in the Church which waits for Him, and in that which is around Him, from everlasting to everlasting.

Amen.

I give Thee thanks unfeigned, O Jesus, Friend in need,
For what Thy soul sustained, When Thou for me didstbleed. Grant me to lean unshaken
Upon Thy faithfulness, Until I hence am taken
To see Thee face to face.

T. St. Theodulph (151 G)

(The following hymn is played in memory of our departed brothers and sisters in Christ who have served the Lord through the music ministries of His Church. We invite you, in silence, to reflect on the words of the hymn as the band plays.)

Sleep thy last sleep,
Free from care and sorrow; Rest, where none weep, Till the eternal morrow; Though dark waves roll O’er the silent river,
Thy fainting soul Jesus can deliver.

T. (602 A)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

Amen.

Sing hallelujah, praise the Lord! Sing with a cheerful voice;
Exalt our God with one accord, And in His name rejoice.
Ne’er cease to sing, O ransomed host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Until in realms of endless light Your praises shall unite.

There we to all eternity Shall join the angelic lays
And sing in perfect harmony
To God our Savior’s praise;
He has redeemed us by His blood, And made us kings and priests toGod; For us, for us, the Lamb was slain!
Praise ye the Lord! Amen.

T. Bechler (159 D)

ABOUT THE EASTER MORNING SERVICE

The Easter Morning Service of the Moravians is an old service, rich in deep spiritual significance. It originated in Herrnhut, Saxony, a village which had been established in 1722 on the estate of Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf by a band of religious refugees, descendants of the Ancient Unitas Fratrum. On Easter Sunday in 1732, in the early morning hours, a group of earnest young men met by special appointment on “God’s Acre” to sing appropriate hymns and to meditate upon the great fact of Christ’s death and resurrection. To these young men, as they stood among the simply marked graves, singing their songs of hope and faith, watching the sun drive darkness from the hills and valleys, there came a deeper appreciation of the truth of the resurrection than they had ever before experienced. With this simple beginning, the holding of Easter morning services outdoors in the beauty of God’s creation became an annual feature in the worship services of the Moravian Church wherever it established itself.

Here at Friedberg, this service, with little variation from the traditional and liturgical form, has been held since 1770. It is in no sense one of spectacular appeal or pageantry, but is held as a service of true worship, centering on the great underlying fact of the Christian faith, THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST, through which God placed a seal of approval on Jesus’ atoning sacrifice and established the truth of the claims of our religion. The service offers all who attend an opportunity to renew their faith in the Risen Christ, in “the communion of saints,” in “the forgiveness of sins,” and in “the life everlasting.”

THE GRAVEYARD - GODS ACRE

The first burial in the Friedberg graveyard, that of Peter Frye, Sr., took place on May 5, 1766. Brother Frye entered the more immediate presence of the Savior he loved, having been blessed with 76 years., 4 months and 23 days of earthly life.

Moravians still call their graveyard by that significant and ancient name used by their ancestors - “God’s Acre.” It is a “field” in which the bodies of loved ones are sown in faith as “physical bodies,” in due time to be raised as “spiritual bodies.”

A distinctive feature of God’s Acre is the recumbent stones, symbolizing the Moravian belief in democracy of death and making it impossible to distinguish between the graves of rich and poor. Here at Friedberg, men, women and children are each buried in separate sections of the graveyard rather than by families. This is a form of the traditional Moravian choir system (grouping members according to their station in life) instituted by Count Zinzendorf over two hundred and fifty years ago.

THE CHURCH BAND

Music was from the beginning assigned a prominent place in the Moravian Church, both for its cultural value and as an aid in the expression and development of the religious life. Congregational singing is made a feature of its services, and the band is used to helpful advantage in the outdoor services, on festival occasions, and in the Moravian funeral services.

About two o’clock on Easter morning, all Moravian musicians who play in the band assemble in groups to go throughout the city playing chorales, partly to remind all listeners of the Resurrection, and partly to awaken people for the Sunrise Service at God’s Acre in Old Salem. The first chorale played is “Sleepers, Wake!”

SEEKING OPPORTUNITY FOR SERVICE

While grateful for an honorable past, the Moravian Church is conscious of its present obligation and opportunity, and desires earnestly to fulfill its further mission. Accordingly, the church calls upon very person to “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved,” to unite with a church of choice, and enter into definite Christian witness and service for the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom. In the Risen Christ is the hope of the world!

At Peace Before Your Enemies
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over” (Psalm 23:5).

We love the promise of being served a feast in the presence of our enemies while they watch. But just who are these enemies? In biblical terms, there are the demonic kind and the human kind. In Psalm 23, David is referring to demonic enemies; these represent the devil and all his hellish principalities and powers.

According to Jesus, “The enemy … is the devil” (Matthew 13:39). Yet, many of our enemies aren’t from hell. When Jesus tells us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44), he isn’t speaking of the devil and his hordes. He is talking about people in our lives who have become tools used by Satan to make us miserable. It was David’s fleshly enemies who caused him to cry, “Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; in You I take shelter” (Psalm 143:9).

You may have only a few human enemies or you may have an abundance, depending on your sphere of influence. In any case, if you have your heart set to follow Jesus, you will be an offense to some. And you’re going to be resisted by both nonbelievers and fleshly Christians alike.

You will be marked as a target by the devil and his wicked spirits; your adversary, the devil, is going to attack you physically and spiritually. And he’ll stir up trouble for you among your human enemies, if he can. The Lord’s supernatural feast becomes even more amazing because both classes of enemies have to sit by and watch as the Lord serves you.

God’s Word says of the righteous, “His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon Himself His crown shall flourish” (Psalm 132:18). God is saying, in essence, “Your fleshly enemies thought you were finished, but now they can only gaze in wonder as I feed and bless you.”

On the occasion that you fail him and feel that Satan has gained a foothold in your life, the Lord beckons, “Come to the feast. Sit down and taste of my mercy. I want you feasting at my table in the presence of your enemies.”

Victory in Troubled Times
Carter Conlon

The Bible warned that there will be unspeakable darkness and a great falling away in the last days before Christ returns, but most of us probably never thought we would live to see a day of moral decay quite like this.

Before David became king, he lived in a season when his own nation was in fearful spiritual decline. Self-will and false spiritualism, under King Saul, were on full display, leading the nation toward what inevitably would become certain defeat without divine intervention. David soon found himself being pursued by an army that hoped to cast off all that represented God. Of course, we know that David ultimately ended up being someone who made a difference.

What are we supposed to do in these days? We must pray for deliverance from the spirit of the age. “Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men, who plan evil things in their hearts” (Psalm 140:1-2). In this psalm, David was referring to those who were looking for a solution in human terms. David was the Christ-type of his generation, and he felt called to something higher than the petty violence and grievance of his generation.

We, too, must pray for deliverance from the spirit of this age, saying, “Lord, I do not want to be part of the problem but part of the solution. Help me to get my mind back on spiritual things. Get me away from the media and anything that might poison my spirit and cause my speech to lose its effectiveness as it becomes exactly the way of the world. Give me your Holy Spirit! Give me your thoughts, your mind, your compassion for the multitudes. Help me to love even my enemies.”

In the natural, we are on the weaker side; but in the spiritual, we are already more than conquerors. We are seated at the right hand of Almighty God, the one who already destroyed the power of darkness and sits in all power and authority. We have direct access to the throne of God with power to push back the darkness and believe that there will be victory and rejoicing in the days ahead!

A Revelation Greater Than Our Sufferings
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

At one point in his walk of faith, the apostle Paul said, “The Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me that bonds and afflictions await me” (see Acts 20:23). Indeed, throughout Paul’s entire life, his afflictions never let up. You may wonder, “How can this be? The God we serve is almighty and victorious. He only has to speak a word and make it possible for us to go through life in triumph, with no troubles at all. So, why would our loving Father permit his people to suffer?”

Paul responds to such a question, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17). Paul is saying, in essence, “The suffering we go through on this earth is only momentary compared to eternity.” And right now, as we endure our suffering, God is producing in us a revelation of his glory that will last forever.

Paul had a great revelation of Christ, an incredibly strong faith, and abundant spiritual knowledge. And it all came to him through manifold suffering. Time after time he was beaten, robbed, cast into prison, shipwrecked and even buffeted and frustrated by the devil himself. He wrote, “Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but Satan hindered us” (1 Thessalonians 2:18).

Paul understood that in everything he endured, the Holy Spirit was teaching him things he couldn’t learn any other way. “I, Paul … now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ … to fulfill the word of God” (Colossians 1:23-25). The apostle is saying here, “God is giving me something for you through this trial. He’s revealing to me a truth that’s been hidden throughout the ages, and that truth is Christ in you, the hope of glory. His power is working mightily in you” (see verse 29).

This man had his own full, glorious revelation of Christ; one of the great secrets of Paul’s spirituality was his readiness to accept whatever condition he was in without complaining. Your current situation may become hell on earth, draining you of every tear. But if you're faithful to remain in it—if you honor God's word, believing him for endurance—he'll change you dramatically into a truly spiritual person.

Having MS I have my share of hurting, pain and suffering. When at these times I just think of the hurt, pain and suffering our Lord and Savior went through before and during His crucifixion. My pain and suffering is NOTHING compared to what Jesus went through for me and everyone who believes and accepts Him as their Lord and Savior.

ARE YOU SURRENDERING TO HIS AUTHORITY?

David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Isaiah is speaking here of a wonderful prince of peace coming to rule over a kingdom made up of a people wholly submitted to the prince’s supreme authority. And the prince himself would provide loving counsel to those he ruled over, guiding and directing their lives. Of course, the prince Isaiah speaks of is Christ. His kingdom has indeed come, existing in the hearts of his people. And the government of all creation rests on the shoulders of our wonderful Savior.

Isaiah adds, “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end” (9:7). From now to the end of time, Jesus is going to rule over his kingdom with divine order. Now, if Christ reigns as the supreme authority over his kingdom and we are his subjects, then our lives must be governed by him. What, exactly, does it mean for us to be governed by Jesus? To govern means “to guide, to direct, to control all actions and behavior of those under authority.” In short, Jesus must be allowed to control everything we do. He must guide and direct our lives daily, including our every thought, word and deed.

Jesus rules supreme in his own kingdom, the one he has established in the hearts of his people. He said, “Indeed, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21). And it is within this kingdom — this realm of our hearts — that Christ rules supreme over his people, guiding us, healing us, governing our actions and behavior.

Can you honestly say that day after day, Jesus’ government over you is increasing? Are you bringing your behavior more and more under his authority? Allow your king, Jesus, to govern your life through his Word, and then you will be blessed. Indeed, your life will be filled with joy!

Overlooking Hurts to Forgive
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

If you claim to have no enemies, I suggest you take a closer look. Of course, every Christian faces an enemy in Satan. The apostle Peter warns us: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”.

Jesus makes clear that we have nothing to fear from the devil. Our Lord has given us all power and authority over Satan and his demonic forces: “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you”. Christ clearly states that the battle with Satan has already been won.

The Greek meaning of the word “devour” as used in verse 8 above is “to attempt to swallow you in one gulp.” Peter is talking about any single issue —a struggle, trial or temptation — that could swallow you up and send you into depression, fear or discouragement. This is referring to our trials with human enemies — flesh and blood opponents, people we may live with or work alongside.

You may be able to testify that you have won a great victory in Christ. You have successfully resisted all temptations and evil desires, all lusts and materialism, all loves of this world. But at the same time, you may be devoured by an ongoing struggle with someone who has risen up against you, manifesting envy and bitterness; misrepresenting your actions and motives; smearing your reputation; opposing you at every turn; seeking to thwart God’s purpose in your life.

If this describes you — you’re enduring a trial brought on by a human adversary — this personal attack may have robbed you of all peace. When you read Jesus’ words to love one another, you may protest, “Lord, I’ll serve you with a whole heart but don’t expect me to lay down this hurt. I just can’t do it.” Jesus says, “Love your enemies … do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”.

We bring glory to our heavenly Father whenever we overlook hurts and forgive the sins done to us. To do so builds character in us — and the Holy Spirit brings us into a revelation of favor and blessing we’ve never known.

Are You Submitting to God?
Tim Dilena

“Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you” .

A young man felt a call on his life to serve in missionary work, so he went to his spiritual leader for guidance. During their conversation, the leader discerned an independent spirit and edgy attitude in the young man. As he observed these disturbing signs, he counseled him, “Before you can become a missionary, you must become ‘submissionary’” — meaning, of course, that he must learn to submit.

Submission is a hard word but a very powerful one. Christians are schooled in the practice of binding Satan over themselves, people, churches and cities, but Satan doesn’t flee unless the one praying possesses a spirit submissive to God. In other words, it is impossible to resist the devil in any area if there is not submission to God in every area.

Submission recognizes God’s authority and his Word. It’s relatively easy to submit until you encounter something you don’t agree with. For example, if a young man knows that the Word of God says not to marry a non-Christian but he decides that “love trumps God” and he goes ahead with the marriage, he is not submissive to the authority of the Father. He may argue that he loves God and is submissive to him, but you cannot submit without obeying. You see, submission is the attitude, but obedience is the action that proves the attitude.

Once, a mother instructed her disobedient son to sit in a corner as discipline. After a couple of minutes of sitting, the child told his mother, “I’m sitting down on the outside, but I’m standing up on the inside.” This is a perfect example of obeying but not submitting.

Christian author Edwin Louis Cole said, “Your ability to resist temptation is directly proportionate to your submission to God.” Don’t sin by thinking you know better than God what’s best for you. Recognize your heavenly Father as your authority and obey him with a smile on your face!

Access to God’s Spirit
Gary Wilkerson

“There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you’” .

Jesus had just begun his ministry and already had a small following of disciples. This miracle at the wedding in Cana was his first and it revealed his glory to the world in spectacular fashion. Yet it contains deep significance for the church beyond that time and place.

Throughout the New Testament, wine is associated with the manifest presence of God through the Holy Spirit. In this scene, wine was at the center of the wedding celebration and was poured out freely to be served to the invited guests. It is a picture of a joyful people to whom God’s Spirit flows freely. But verse three contains a powerfully symbolic phrase: “When the wine ran out.”

The hosts ran out of wine at the wedding and the people needed it replenished to sustain their joy. As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit present in us, yet we have to be filled with the Spirit continually as we experience an ebb and flow in our walk with Christ. This does not mean the Spirit leaves us, but we are called back again and again to quench the deep thirst that the Spirit himself puts in us.

The best way to be filled with God’s Spirit is simply to heed his voice and obey his commands. Doing so provides us with peace, safety and joy, and allows us to speak to God with authority. As followers of Jesus, we are to be filled with his peace, unshaken by evil, our lives shining as lights amid darkness. We are to have a ready response when those around us ask, “How can you have such peace in the midst of all that is going on?”

God is going to have a testimony of his goodness in the midst of panic, a testimony of holiness in evil times. Pray with me: “Lord, pour out the wine of your Spirit on me — your wine of healing, anointing, deliverance and restoration. Move through your children to bring new life. Amen!”

Are You Becoming More Like Christ?

David Wilkerson (1931-2011)
Growing in grace means to increase in Christ likeness through the unmerited power of God’s Spirit. Are you relying on the Holy Spirit to make you more like Jesus — in your home, your relationships, your job?
This question applies especially to mature Christians, those who have built a spiritual foundation over the years through regular Bible study, a consistent prayer life, and godly instruction. After all your studying, praying and learning, are you becoming more like Jesus? Are you more compassionate, meek, merciful and forgiving than you were at this time last year? Or has your growth been stunted and settled on a plateau of zero growth?
The apostle Peter describes an awesome day coming when the heavens will pass away, the earth’s elements will melt, and everything in creation will dissolve. Therefore, he says, we should continually be prepared and longing for our Lord’s return: “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness” .

Peter’s warning in verse 17, “lest ye also,” presents a strong challenge to believers. He is confronting us, saying, “You’re a lover of Jesus. You claim to be ready and yearning for the Lord’s return; in fact, you’re always warning others to do the same. But are you an example to the rest of Christ’s church in your walk? Or do you live as if Jesus isn’t ever coming back? Be careful, because you can also be led away by the error of the wicked.”
This “error of the wicked” is the mistaken idea that Jesus isn’t really at the door. This results in a lack of concern, a tragic complacency, a carelessness demonstrated in conversation and lifestyle at this late hour.
You may testify that you’re saved, justified, sanctified; you’ve escaped the lusts of this wicked age; you’re blessed with intimate knowledge of Jesus. But Peter warns, “There is a danger of being led astray from growth, back into the bondage of bitterness and revenge. You can become unkind, unmerciful, unforgiving.”
Be sure that you are growing in grace! God has been merciful to you, so be merciful to others.

The Power of the Holy Spirit in Your Life
Jim Cymbala

The Holy Spirit is underappreciated and underpreached by the twenty-first century church. A sort of prejudice against the Holy Spirit impedes many from learning more about him. In fact, the body of Christ is often divided into two sides. One side stresses the Word of God, separating itself from what it views as the emotional fanaticism often linked to those emphasizing the work of the Holy Spirit. The other side is sometimes known for drifting into unbiblical manifestations and unorthodox teaching while attributing it all to the Spirit of God.

Seeing the abuse and bad teaching, many on the first side will say, “I’m not interested in experiences and manifestations of the Holy Spirit. I just want to study the Word.” But it was the Holy Spirit who inspired the Bible, and there are lots of promises concerning his person and work. How can anyone treasure God’s Word without giving the Holy Spirit his rightful place?

Those who move in circles strongly emphasizing the Holy Spirit must be reminded that everything must be tested by scripture. The Spirit never contradicts the Word he gave us. He also never puts the focus on the preacher because the Holy Spirit was sent to glorify Christ alone (John 16:14).

Somewhere in the middle is the kind of Christianity we see in scripture where the Word of God is honored along with a childlike dependence and openness to the Holy Spirit.

Only the Holy Spirit can make the things of Christ real and alive to people. Christianity does not stop at the cross where Jesus died and paid the price for our sins. After Good Friday was Resurrection Sunday when the Spirit raised Christ.

“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified” (John 7:37-39).

Everything about the Spirit speaks to powerful currents of life that refresh and flow out to bless others. May the Holy Spirit come down on us, for we are truly helpless without him.

Boasting in God’s Work in Your Life
Gary Wilkerson

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty” (2 Timothy 3:1, ESV). Right now things are taking place we could never have imagined. Jesus predicted that men would become lovers of themselves, lovers of money, hateful, proud and arrogant. Today if someone has the nerve to mention sin, he is called a bigot and made an outcast. As God’s Word is moved to the sidelines of the culture, sin becomes more and more prevalent.

As Christ’s Body, we dare not be asleep to these things. The Old Testament speaks of the sons of Issachar “who had understanding of the times” and skill in dealing with the world (see 1 Chronicles 12:32). Can the same be said of Christ’s Body today?

If we discern the times, we know this isn’t a moment for half measures. The only way for us to “deal with the world” is to not let church be business as usual. Jesus said of certain demonic spirits, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21, NKJV). In these times, our prayers have to be fervent, because without spiritual change, things look too bleak.

In the midst of darkness, Jesus calls us to be light. And here is our message for such a time: “Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4, JKV). God has done awesome works in the lives of his people and each one of us is called to proclaim his glory through a testimony that can be called boast-worthy — worthy of being praised and extolled.

What does a boast-worthy testimony look like? Paul says, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord” (2 Corinthians 10:17, NLT). In order to do the kind of boasting Paul describes, we must have a boast worthy of God’s glory. For instance, Stephen was a deacon who distributed food to widows — a good testimony in itself. But his boast-worthy testimony came when he preached to an unbelieving crowd and so provoked them that they stoned him, making him the first martyr of the church.

Our boast-worthy testimony will come only from the power of God, not from our own strength, zeal or effort: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV).

Loving Others in Spite of Their Sins
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

One of the supreme marks of a mature believer is love for all of lost humankind. Such a Christian shows love equally for Jews and Palestinians, for Bosnians and Serbs, for everyone.

Only a full-grown, mature believer can accept these words of Jesus: "Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you and spitefully use you. If your enemy is hungry, feed him." I ask you: can you imagine spending a month in a Palestinian field hospital, nursing and feeding soldiers who want to destroy Israel? Can you keep your prejudices in check as you read inflammatory news reports in the coming days? Will you have the same spirit that was in Christ, who said as he was crucified, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do"?

If you want to walk as Jesus walked, you can't allow your human passions to be inflamed by headlines. Christ died for every lost soul on this earth! Right now, our jails are filled with convicts who have become powerful witnesses of the saving love of Jesus, all because somebody loved them in spite of their sins.

Are you loving others in spite of how they may have hurt you, someone you care about or simply because they might be different than you? There are few things that make you more like Christ than when you sacrificially love someone, especially someone not in your circle or easy to naturally be around.

You can know you're growing in grace if you're able to pray for those whom the world hates. As we hear of terrible things happening, we're to stand against every prejudice that rises up in us, and declare, "I take Christ's authority over this. I will love humankind as my Lord did."
Love the sinner but hate the sin......

A Measure of God’s Glorious Spirit
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“Then He said to them, ‘Take heed that you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him’” (Mark 4:24-25).

Jesus knew his words would sound strange to nonspiritual ears so he prefaced the message by saying, “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear” (4:23). He was saying, in essence, “If your heart is open to God’s Spirit, you’ll understand what I have to say to you.” Jesus is speaking of the glory of God in our lives, Christ’s manifest presence. In short, the Lord measures out his glorious presence in various amounts, whether to churches or individuals.

Jesus alone was given the Holy Spirit without measure: “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure” (John 3:34). The Lord has already allotted to each of us a measure of his Spirit. Paul writes, “To each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift” (Ephesians 4:7) and “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith” (Romans 12:3).

What is God’s goal in measuring out his Spirit, his glory and presence, to us in varying amounts? He has a single purpose, that “… we all come to the unity of the faith … to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).

Today, cry out to Jesus, “I don’t want to miss what you’re about to do in your church.” As you give to your Savior a greater measure of yourself, you will see evidence everywhere of his presence, glory and love. He has promised to pour out his Spirit on his people in these last days, and he will be faithful to come to you and give you more of himself.

Reaping Life Everlasting
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

We have all heard, “Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7), and it usually is spoken with a negative connotation, but there is also a positive side to sowing: “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (6:9).

A parable is a story that illustrates a truth and in the parable of the talents, Jesus focuses primarily on the good side of sowing, which is sowing to the Spirit to reap life everlasting.

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them” (Matthew 25:14-19).

Briefly, the parable deals with a man who entrusted three servants with differing amounts of money to steward while he was on a trip. When he returned, he found that two of his servants had invested their money and made a profit while the third had merely buried his money for safekeeping. The master was pleased with the first two and very displeased with the third.

Jesus is “the man traveling to a far country” (25:14), and we are the servants with the talents representing our measure of grace and revelation of Jesus. We are commanded to go out and sow this revelation. This parable shows that God will have a fruitful, glorious harvest at the end. Two out of the three servants will come before the judgment loaded with fruit and full of joy — good and faithful servants — and the third will be banished.

Beloved, I encourage you to examine your heart and then become a part of God’s last-day army! He will have a last-day harvest, and only willing, faithful servants of the Lord will be part of this great gathering.
Are you ready for that great gathering? It is so much closer than you can imagine.

Overcoming the Temptation to Fear
Carter Conlon

No one needs to convince you that the days ahead are going to be more difficult than ever — you already know it. Something inside your heart perceives it, in spite of the deepest optimism that many try to generate. Everything that can be shaken is about to be shaken.

As the world’s culture is quickly spinning into something that is out of our control, we can be thankful that it is never out of God’s control. Jesus’ disciples once asked Him, “And what shall be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3). In Matthew 24:4-11, not only did Jesus foretell the wars, earthquakes, famines and outbreaks of disease that are unfolding before our eyes, but he also warned that in the last days, religious deception would reach epic proportions.

The end-time strategy of Satan is clear: Divert those who are trying to find refuge during calamitous times by presenting a myriad of false Christ-options along the way. Satan himself is the author of much of the chaos in the world, and when the chaos begins to mount, he will put false signposts throughout the world that claim to point the way to Christ. Satan’s goal will be to confuse the people of God as well as the prodigals who are trying to come home to the safety of the presence of the Lord.

The Scriptures bear witness that the battles we face are common to all men. There is no temptation that is unique to you (see 1 Corinthians 10:13), including the temptation to give in to fear. Even the apostle Paul expressed this common struggle when he said, “Outside were conflicts, inside were fears” (2 Corinthians 7:5).

We see from Scriptures that in spite of some trepidation, Paul refused to draw back from whatever awaited him: “None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy” (Acts 20:24). You may have a deep sense of foreboding because of world events, but those who know God will look at what the world sees as catastrophe and be able to embrace it in some measure as an opportunity for God to give us his grace to endure. In the midst of it all, we must be able to hear the word of the Lord to his church: “Fear not!”

Confidence to Access God
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“According to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him” (Ephesians 3:11-12). God’s children have the right and freedom to break in on our Lord at any time — one of the greatest privileges ever bestowed on humankind.

Our heavenly Father sits on his throne in eternity and at his right hand sits his Son, our blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus. Outside this throne room are gates, which open to all who are in Christ. At any time — day or night — we can bypass guardian angels, seraphim and all the heavenly hosts to boldly enter these gates and approach our Father’s throne. Christ has provided us direct access to the Father, to receive all the mercy and grace we need, no matter what our circumstance.

This wasn’t always the case. In the Old Testament, with few exceptions, no person had access to the Father. Abraham was called a friend of God and enjoyed a measure of access to the Lord, but even he remained “outside the veil.”

Moses, the leader of Israel, had unusual access to God, who said, “I, the Lord … speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings” (Numbers 12:6-8). But the rest of Israel knew nothing of this kind of access.

Christ’s life in human flesh provided greater access to the Father, but even that was limited. At the moment of his death, however, the veil of the temple in Jerusalem was literally ripped apart and our destiny was sealed. When Jesus gave up the ghost, we were given total, unrestricted access to the holy of holies: “Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh” (Hebrews 10:19-20).

Scripture admonishes us, “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith … Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (10:22-23). God is urging us, “Come into my presence often, daily. You can’t maintain your faith if you’re not drawing near to me. If you don’t boldly enter my presence, your faith is going to waver.”

Determine in your heart to take full advantage of God’s great gift of access. Your eternal future depends on it!

Grace for Your Suffering
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

Grace has often been defined as, simply, the unmerited favor and blessing of God. Yet, I believe grace is much more than this. It is everything that Christ is to us in our times of suffering — power, might, kindness, mercy and love — to see us through our afflictions and trials.

Jesus says the rain falls on both the just and the unjust (see Matthew 5:45) — referring to given problems of life such as marriage problems, worries over children, financial pressures, sickness. And the righteous may battle against pride, depression and fear, feelings of inadequacy, oppression of the enemy.

You may question why nations suffer — why there is such awful famine, pestilence, flooding, hunger, disease and destruction. Scripture sheds light on the world’s sufferings through its portrayal of God’s people, ancient Israel. That nation suffered similar calamities: holocausts, captivity, economic collapse, strange diseases. At times Israel’s sufferings were so horrible that even their enemies pitied them.

Why did Israel suffer such terrible things? Scripture makes it clear in each instance that it was because they forsook God and turned to idolatry (see Deuteronomy 4:25-28). It is important to note, however, that along with every righteous judgment upon Israel came manifestations of divine grace in preserving a godly remnant, and fulfilling his divine purpose in and through them in spite of their failures (see 4:29-30).

Even though the reason for our trials may remain a mystery, we should be prepared to accept them until Jesus comes for us. There will be no end to them, so the wise believer will determine in his heart to get to know Jesus more intimately and seek him as never before.

Someday in glory, our heavenly Father will reveal to us the beautiful plan he had for us while we were going through hard times. He will show us how we attained patience through all our trials; how we learned compassion for others; how his strength was made perfect in our weakness; how we learned his utter faithfulness toward us; how we became more like him, our precious Lord and Savior. And until the day we meet him face to face, our loving heavenly Father says, “I have all the grace you need to overcome!”

Embracing a Personal Relationship With Jesus
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

When Jesus was a young boy, a few people saw him in the temple; others met him in the carpentry shop where he toiled. But who could believe Jesus was God in flesh as he repaired their broken chairs? He was merely Joseph’s son, a fine young man who knew a lot about God.

When Jesus began his ministry, he directed his words to a small population in a very small country — that is, to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And because he could be in only one place at a time, access to him was restricted. If you wanted to get to Jesus, you had to go to Judah, and if you lived outside of Israel, you had to travel for days or weeks by boat or camel or on foot. Then, you had to trace his presence to a village, find a crowd there and ask them to locate him. You might have to walk all day and night to get to where he was teaching the masses.

Once you found Jesus, you had to be physically close to him to hear his voice, receive his touch, or be blessed by his holy presence. To get to the Lord, you had to be in the right place at the right time. Consider the blind man who heard Jesus passing by and cried out, “Jesus, heal me, that I may receive my sight!” Or, consider the woman with the issue of blood. She had to push through a crowd to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment, while all around others were also struggling to touch him.

But all that changed in one sudden, glorious moment. “Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matthew 27:50-51). This tearing of the physical veil represents what took place in the spirit world — when we were granted unrestricted and instant access to the Father on a blood-stained cross. This is a wonderful gift that has been granted to us, so be careful that you do not take it for granted or treat it casually. Our Savior urges us to draw near to him and we should do so with utmost reverence and devotion.
Anywhere, anytime we can come to our Lord God our Father thru Jesus Christ our Savior.

JOIN GOD’S PRAYING PEOPLE
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

By the time the godly prophet Daniel reached eighty years of age, he had outlived two Babylonian kings, Nebuchadnezzar and his son Belshazzar, and then served under King Darius. Daniel had always been a praying man and he had no thoughts of slowing down in his old age.

King Darius had promoted Daniel to the highest office in the land, putting him in charge of forming government policy and teaching all the court appointees and intellectuals: “Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm” (Daniel 6:3).

Obviously, Daniel was one busy prophet. But nothing could take this man of God away from his times of prayer. Three times a day, he stole away from all his obligations, burdens and demands as a leader to spend time with the Lord.

Daniel is an example to us of how important it is to have praying leaders. Remember, he had been appointed over every other leader in the land. Consider the immense effort it took for Daniel to devote himself to prayer. After all, he lived in the New York City of his time — great, majestic, wealthy Babylon. And he lived in a time of spiritual apathy — of drunkenness, pleasure-seeking and greed among God’s people.

Prayer does not come naturally to anyone, including Daniel. A disciplined prayer time is easy to start yet hard to maintain — both our flesh and the devil conspire against it. Prayer that is effectual comes from the faithful, diligent servant who sees his nation and the church falling deeper into sin and falls on his knees and cries out to God on their behalf. God strongly desires to bless his people but if our minds are polluted with the spirit of this world, we are in no position to receive his blessings.

Will you be a part of God’s praying people today? If so, cry out to him, “Oh, Lord, whatever it takes, keep me on my knees. I long to see your Spirit moving in the hearts of men and women!”

Life Guided by Clear Purpose
Gary Wilkerson

When you first came to know Jesus, your heart was probably filled with sharp, clear purpose. You experienced God's healing love and, like many new Christians, you longed to share it with others, evangelizing and serving. As you moved forward in this new life, you began to better discern your role in God’s kingdom and your gifts for serving him.

But then something peculiar began to happen. Almost daily, your singular focus on Jesus got crowded out by other demands. Little things popped up that captured your attention and distracted you to the point that you slowly lost your single-mindedness. Sadly, Christ began to fade into the background of your attention.

The Flying Wallendas, a family best known for performing high-wire acts without a safety net, demonstrate this need for laser-like focus. In June of 2013, Nik Wallenda added to his family’s legend by walking on a wire across a gorge in the Grand Canyon. With balance pole in hand and a gritty determination, he battled a fierce wind as he strode forward — and walked all the way across the chasm, never distracted for a moment. His focus was literally a matter of life and death!

As Christians, we have an even higher calling and we must not become distracted to the point of meandering and mediocrity. John the Baptist would not allow himself to become distracted. When a theological dispute arose and several disciples tried to draw him into it, he would not allow it. He told them, “You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent from Him.’ … He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:28, 30). His focus in life was clear; his holy calling was centered completely on Jesus.

Today, our success-driven culture causes us to seek things for ourselves. But our overriding passion must be for Christ and proclaiming the kingdom of God, just as John did. You can have God’s own Spirit without measure, to guide you in the purposes he has planned for you. Be sure that you keep your sights trained on Jesus and the fact that he is your primary reason for living!

The Evidence of Time Spent With Jesus
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

After Peter and John ministered to a crippled beggar outside the temple gate and the man was healed, they began to boldly preach repentance and minister to the people. “Many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand” (Acts 4:4). As a result of their witness, Peter and John were brought before the high priest and elders. “And when they had set them in the midst, they asked them, ‘By what power or by what name have you done this?’” (4:7).

This hearing was orchestrated to intimidate Peter and John but it had the opposite effect. Peter must have thought, “Thank you, Jesus, for allowing me to preach your name to these Christ-haters.” This tells us that Peter wasn’t going to deliver a lecture, quiet and reserved. No, he was a Jesus-possessed man, bursting with the Holy Spirit, ready to proclaim the truth!

Peter’s boldness wasn’t a brassy, condemning word, however. His aim wasn’t to judge or belittle those religious leaders. He only wanted them to see their sin and repent. That’s why he gave an altar call, saying, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (4:12).

The rulers were astonished. “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained me, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus” (4:13).

Peter must have winked at John and perhaps thought, “They remember that we were with Jesus weeks ago but they don’t realize we’ve been with the resurrected Master ever since.” The two men were just recently with him in the upper room and that morning, they were with him as they prayed in their cell.

This is what happens with men and women who spend time with Jesus. Even when they come away from their time with Christ, he’s with them wherever they go.

When the crisis strikes, you don’t have time to build yourself up in prayer and faith — those who have been with Jesus are always ready. Truly, this is a blessed assurance.

God’s Light Alters Everything
Gary Wilkerson

“Early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them” (John 8:2, NLT).

Jesus’ reputation had spread far and wide because he spoke profound words and performed powerful works of God. Yet, no sooner had this crowd of commoners gathered than the religious leaders showed up.

“As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. ‘Teacher,’ they said to Jesus, ‘this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?’” (8:3-5). These leaders saw Jesus as a threat to their authority because he exposed their rigid, self-justifying practices and they were trying to trap him (see 8:6).

The scene unfolded dramatically. Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger and, as they continued to demand an answer, he stood up and said, “All right, let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped again and wrote in the dust — and the accusers slipped away one by one.

“Then Jesus … said to the woman, ‘Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?’ ‘No, Lord,’ she said. And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I. Go and sin no more’” (8:10-11).

As Jesus defused a highly charged situation, he used the moment to deliver one of his most famous teachings: “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” (8:12). God’s light in that moment altered everything!

Jesus transformed every heart present — what an amazing moment. The powerful love behind God’s grace was revealed and in the crowd’s eyes this was a miracle that immediately transformed them. Jesus used that stunning moment to teach about the cross: “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand I am he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me … Then many who heard him say these things believed in him” (8:28-30).

Every time you act as Jesus did, extending grace to those marginalized by sin, you take part in a great transformation. All through the amazing grace of our Savior!

Jesus is Never Caught Off Guard
David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

“War broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail … So the great dragon was cast out … he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him” (Revelation 12:7-9).

We are in a war between two powers: Satan’s principalities and powers, and God’s only Son, Jesus. This war started eons ago in heaven with the archangel Michael and an army of angels fighting against Lucifer and the rebellious angels who had aligned themselves with him.

Satan lost the battle and was cast down to earth with the other insubordinate angels (who comprised a third of all the angels of heaven) and he began waging war against God’s people. He appointed demon-possessed people to be prophets, teachers, even rulers of nations, and he sent them forth to spread his unholy “gospel.” But the devil had a problem. He couldn’t win converts through his teachings or persuade anyone of his gospel because it didn’t produce life or provide peace, joy or power over enslaving sin. So he had to resort to warfare.

The war Satan wages has always been against God’s people, those who believe and preach Jesus Christ as Lord. But our Lord is never caught off guard. He knows the end from the beginning and he knew Satan’s flood against the church had to be thwarted before it consumed them.

The Lord proclaims: “The Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings … You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet” (Malachi 4:2-3). When hell seems to have won, heaven will cry, “Help is on the way. Don’t fear! The gates of hell will not prevail against God’s people.”

What a day it will be when evil men realize that the very name they tried to wipe out completely now stands before them as their Judge. Our Lord’s divinity will be undeniable and every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!

Jesus asked the twelve disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” and Peter answered, “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:29). May our answer be the same as Peter’s — and may that be our confession before the whole world, now and forever. Jesus has won the war!

I am praying for our nation.

I agree that our nation is deep trouble and that we are in desperate need of God’s help. You can count on me. I am praying for our nation.

I am praying for healing against the sickness of sin that has divided our country.

I am praying for wisdom and direction for President Trump, Vice President Pence, for governors, mayors, and officials in cities experiencing destruction and civil unrest. I am praying that they will rely upon God in every situation and for the decisions they make.

I am praying for comfort for George Floyd's family members.

I am praying for God to pour out His Holy Spirit across our land and touch the hearts of people with peace and love for one another. I am praying that God will forgive our sins and heal our land.

I am praying that God will change hearts and heal this divide in our nation.

AMEN
