Trump recently took over the Kennedy Center, firing its board, appointing himself chair of the body, and replacing its members with loyalists in what many critics believe is a bid to remake the venerable institution in his own image.




Washington Post associate editor Marc Fischer wrote Wednesday that there has been much worry in the anti Trump world that the president will turn the Kennedy Center into an easy listening temple, a reliquary for washed-up middlebrow acts, a refuge for the few artists who wave the MAGA flag. The New York Times obtained a leaked recording of President Donald Trump that spelled out his unique ideas for the world famous center for the performing arts, as well as the annually televised Kennedy Center Honours.

Trump visited the center this week, after replacing all the Biden appointees on the board of the once bipartisan institution and having himself elected chairman.


He would change the name of the center itself if he could get away with it.


On one section of the recording, Trump promised to bring back Broadway musicals, like Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats. Trump said he first saw the show as a young man and, at first, said he didnt see what all the fuss was about.

Then, I saw all these bodies, and then I noticed those bodies were gorgeous. They had silk tights on, and they were all ballerinas, and women from Broadway. And men -I didnt find those particular bodies as attractive to be honest.

After a board member asked if there were any new musicals that were not totally woke, somebody replied that, in a break with the past, the center would be doing some shows not affiliated with Actors? Equity, the union representing actors. The person said that the change opens us up for a whole bunch of more options

Also on the presidents mind was the centers annual awards ceremony, which he boycotted during his first term because several artists being honored criticized him.

On the recording, Trump complained that the center had been celebrating radical left lunatics and proposed giving posthumous awards to the likes of Pavarotti, Elvis Presley and even Babe Ruth.

The Times noted that, Pavarotti, who died in 2007, had already been honoured by the Kennedy Center in 2001; in 2016 his heirs asked Mr. Trump to STOP playing his recordings at campaign rallies.

Trump suggested that the center branch out from solely honouring artists to include entrepreneurs like major Republican donor, casino mogul Steve Wynn. The Times noted that Trump had appointed Wynns wife, Andrea, to the Kennedy Centers board.


Regarding the televised portion of the Kennedy Center Honours, Trump said, I didnt like it. I couldnt watch it. And the host was always terrible.

He then offered to host the show himself.

Believe me, I dont want to do it, I dont want to do it, he said on the recording.

Trump continued, I have enough publicity. I don?t want to. But I want this thing to be successful in my name.

Some cast members pulled out of Wednesday nights gig at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC because they were aware the President was coming.


He angered performers and patrons at the venue when he announced huge changes to its programming earlier this year having controvesially elected HIMSELF chairman. These plans included a cut on what he called productions, such as drag acts.

And the fury could be felt in the auditorium as Mr Trump and wife Melania took their seats ahead of Les Mis. It was his first time at the venue, the national cultural centre of the US, since becoming President again and since the massive overhaul of its output.

There were also empty seats in the balconies and even in the orchestra section, with talk ahead of the gig that patrons intended to boycott the performance.

It is understood understudies filled in for main performers, who also had decided to boycott the night due to Mr Trumps presence.

Sales of subscription packages are said to have declined since Trumps takeover, and several touring productions, including Hamilton, have cancelled planned runs at the centre. Actor Issa Rae and musician Rhiannon Giddens scrapped scheduled appearances, and Kennedy Center consultants, including musician Ben Folds and singer Ren?e Fleming, resigned.

Yet, Mr Trump remained proud as, clad in a tuxedo, he sat for the performance on Wednesday. The politician has a particular affection for Les Mis?rables, the sprawling musical set in 19th-century France, and has occasionally played its songs at his events.

Trump first outlined plans to revamp the Kennedy Centers Honors program in March, which included his suggestion that he would host the centers award ceremony himself. In July, House Republicans introduced and supported a bill to name the Kennedy Centers Opera House after Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, and in August, Trump openly voiced support for the centers renaming.

White House says it will appoint new Commission of Fine Arts members more aligned with Trumps America First Policies


Donald Trump has fired all six members of an independent federal agency responsible for reviewing his controversial White House ballroom and planned Arc de Trump in Washington DC


The Washington Post first reported that all members of the Commission of Fine Arts were dismissed on Tuesday.

On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as a member of the Commission of Fine Arts is terminated, effective immediately, read an email sent to one of the commissioners, which was obtained by the Post.

A White House official told the Guardian We are preparing to appoint a new slate of members to the commission that are more aligned with Trumps America First Policies

The Commission of Fine Arts was established in 1910, and is tasked with giving expert advice to the President, the Congress and the federal and District of Columbia governments on matters of design and aesthetics according to its website.

Its purview includes reviewing designs proposed for memorials and new or renovated government buildings, and the commission is intended to be staffed by experts in art, architecture and urban design. There is no indication about whom Trump plans to appoint to the commission.

Earlier this month, Trump unveiled plans for a grand arch close to the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington. The design mimics the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but with a gold Lady Liberty on top. Trump I happen to like the large one

Last week, Americans were treated to the sight of a construction crew tearing down part of the East Wing of the White House, as Trump prepares to build a $300m ballroom, funded by wealthy donors.
