The New York Times is reporting that the Canadian government is taking President Donald Trumps threats to make it Americas 51st state incredibly seriously based on a phone call Trump had last month with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
During the call, the Times sources say, Trump told Mr. Trudeau that he did not believe that the treaty that demarcates the border between the two countries was valid and that he wants to revise the boundary and he also mentioned revisiting the sharing of lakes and rivers between the two nations, which is regulated by a number of treaties.
Trump did not offer any specifics or additional information about what revising the border would look like but it was apparently enough to convince Trudeau that the president really had ambitions to annex his country as an American territory.
Trump is interested in ripping up decades-old treaties signed between the United States and Canada.
The Times notes that earlier reports from other outlets had suggested serious tensions between Trump and Trudeau over Canadian sovereignty.

Donald Trump has said he will double the tariffs he previously announced on Canadian steel and aluminium imports into the US, taking the levies to 50% in total.
In the latest twist in a deepening trade war, Trump said it was in retaliation for 25% tariffs Ontario placed on electricity it sends to northern US states.
Trump said if tariffs including those on agricultural products were not dropped, he would hike taxes on the car industry, which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada

Trump said his tariffs would go into effect on Wednesday morning, and that he would declare a national emergency on electricity in those states if a previous threat from Canada to stop electricity supply happens
He also said Canada relied on the US for military protection, and reiterated that he wanted the country to become the 51st US state.

Long threatened tariffs from Donald Trump have plunged the country into a trade war abroad all while on again, off again new levies continue to escalate uncertainty.

Slimey Donald Trump has launched another furious attack on Canada and threatened to hit the country with tariffs so big they will be read about in history books.
He stepped up his North American trade war today with a new announcement of steep 50% tariffs on all Canadian steel and aluminium - effectively doubling the measures he had previously announced. Donald Trump said the new tariffs, set to take effect today, were a response to the price increases by the provincial government of Ontario put on electricity sold to the United States.
The surcharge had been introduced by regional premier Doug Ford in retaliation to previous tariffs announced against Canada by the White House last month.
In a series of posts on his Truth Social network on Tuesday afternoon, Donald Trump vowed to WRECK Canadas economy over the electricity issue and accused them of using it as a bargaining chip. He said: Why would our Country allow another Country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area? Who made these decisions, and why? '

Mark Carney has vowed a maximum impact response
Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, has previously said he would not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely if Trump retaliated to his energy surcharge and remained bullish today when questioned on the new tariffs.
He said his state will NOT back down in the face of US threats and warned of a potential new recession across North America as a result of the presidents actions, saying: If we go into a recession, it will be called the Trump recession.
It was reported later on Tuesday that Ford had agreed to suspend the 25% charge and will attend a meeting with the White House this week.

Mark Carney has emerged victorious in Canadas federal election setting him up for a clash with Donald Trump amid his trade war and constant threats of an invasion. The former Bank of England governor defeated Conservative Party rival Pierre Poilievre overnight in a shock turnaround for his Liberal Party, who had trailed by 25 points in the polls as recently as February.
In his victory speech this morning, Carney accused Trump of trying to break Canada and he will now likely have the mandate to lead his country through an unprecedented period of tension with its southern neighbour, with the US President having repeatedly called Canada the 51st state and issued threats to annex its territory.
Carneys victory will be seen as a stand of defiance by Canadians against Donald Trump following his continued threats against the country.
Pierre Poilievre -who had attempted to emulate the MAGA movement in Canada saw his comfortable poll lead dramatically collapse after Trump signed three executive orders in February imposing 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada.
This excluded oil and energy exports, which received a lower 10% tariff.
The Liberals had made the countrys resistance to American pressure a core message of their campaign, with Mark Carney repeatedly emphasising his rivals apparent weakness on the Trump issue while touting the slogan Canada strong.
The departure of Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister following nearly a decade in power and Carney's decision to call an early election just days after taking office also gave the Liberals a sudden poll boost, with voters having deemed the party the most capable of going toe to toe with BULLY Trump.

Canadas announcement was similar to recent moves from France and the UK, which also announced plans to recognize Palestinian statehood amid Israels ongoing siege and aid blockade on the Gaza Strip.
Trump has imposed an 1 Aug. deadline for countries to reach a trade agreement with the United States. In the absence of an agreement, countries would be imposed with tariffs as high as 50%, with Canada facing a 35% tariff should an agreement not be reached.
Much like Frances and the UKs, Canada?s announcement was met with fierce pushback from Israeli officials, with that countrys Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted for alleged war crimes by the United Nations saying the decision rewards Hamas monstrous terrorism and punishes its victims.
Calls have grown for Israel to reign in its siege on Gaza in recent months as the Palestinian death toll continues to rise, as do famine conditions brought on largely by Israels aid blockade.
Since Hamas attack on Israel on 7 Oct. 2023, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed, around 17,500 of them children, with 111,588 injured. The true death toll, however, could have been as high as 186,000 in July of 2024
Famine has also worsened in recent weeks, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health reporting 101 deaths from malnutrition since the conflict started, including 80 children.
