A husband who allegedly drugged his wife and invited more than 80 strangers to rape her at their home for almost a decade went on trial on Monday in a case that has shocked France.

Fifty men accused of taking part in the abuse of the woman are also on trial at the court in Avignon. More than a dozen feminists dressed in black protested outside the courthouse as the trial opened.
Police say Dominique Pelicot crushed sleeping tablets and anti-anxiety medication and mixed it into his wife Gis?le?s evening meal or in her wine at their home in Mazan, near Carpentras in Provence. The father of three recruited men to rape and sexually abuse her from a online chatroom, where members fantasised about performing sexual acts on non-consenting partners.
The presiding judge, Roger Arata, announced that all hearings would be public, granting Gisle Pelicot her wish for complete publicity until the end of the court case, according to one of her lawyers, Stphane Babonneau.
The trial would nonetheless be a horrible ordeal for her, said another of her lawyers, Antoine Camus.
For the first time, she will have to live through the rapes that she endured over 10 years, he told Agence France-Presse, adding that his client had ?no recollection? of the abuse that she discovered only in 2020.
Gisle Pelicot, who arrived at the court supported by her three children, did not want a trial behind closed doors because thats what her attackers would have wanted, Camus said.
The accused men recruited by her husband were instructed to avoid smelling of any kind of fragrance or cigarette smoke to avoid alerting his wife and to leave if she moved so much as an arm, investigators said.
Dominique Plicot was arrested on 2 November 2020, after a security guard caught him filming up the skirts of women in the local supermarket. Police found a file labelled abuses on a USB drive connected to his computer that contained 20,000 of images and films of his wife being raped almost 100 times.
Since his arrest he always declared himself guilty, his lawyer has said, adding that he had said: I put her to sleep, I offered her, and I filmed.
Health records reportedly show he obtained 450 sleeping pills in one year alone.
The 50 men on trial with him include a local councillor, nurses, a journalist, a former police officer, a prison guard, soldier, firefighter and civil servant, many of whom lived around Mazan, a town of about 6,000 inhabitants. The men were aged between 26 and 73 at the time of their arrests.
Several of the accused have denied the charges, telling police they had no idea Gisle Pelicot, who married Dominique Plicot in 1973, was not a willing partner and accused him of tricking them.
Detectives were unable to identify and trace more than 30 other men who were recorded.
Investigators said she was devastated to learn of the abuse, saying she had no recollection whatsoever of being raped. She had been drugged almost to a state of coma, investigators added.
One morning she woke in a panic with a new haircut without understanding how this was possible. She went to her hairdresser, who told her she had been in the previous day, Babonneau said.
He said his client, now divorced, believed she had an illness nobody could explain and consulted several doctors, always accompanied by her husband, who blamed her symptoms on tiredness after looking after their grandchildren. Her three children and other relatives suspected she had Alzheimers disease.
The public prosecutor and lawyers for the defendants had asked for the trial to take place behind closed doors for reasons of decency and to protect all parties.
The trial involves acts of extreme violence repeated over a period of ten years of so. Photographs will be circulated, videos will necessarily be viewed and it appears that publicity would be dangerous for public decency and would undermine the dignity of the individuals, both victims and defendants, the prosecutor argued.
But Gisle Plicots lawyers objected. She wants people to know what happened to her and believes that she has no reason to hide. No one can imagine that my client will find any satisfaction in exposing what she has suffered. She wants this hearing to be open so that justice can be done in public, Babonneau said.
Whether one likes it or not, this trial goes beyond the limits of this courtroom. And going behind closed doors also means asking my client to be locked in a place with those who attacked her.
After deliberating, the five professional judges hearing the case ruled it should be held in public.
Dominique Pelicot is also accused of the rape and murder of a 23-year-old estate agent in Paris in 1991. Sophie Narme was drugged, raped and stabbed in the chest.
Another estate agent, 19, was attacked in similar circumstances but escaped after fighting back. Police have said DNA extracted from blood at the scene matched his profile.

To a packed Vaucluse criminal courtroom in Avignon, southern France, five professional judges handed the retired electrician the maximum possible sentence for aggravated rape, meaning the 72-year-old will likely die behind bars.
Prosecutors had complained he deserved more given the scale of his depraved crimes that have earned him the monicker the monster of Mazan, referring to the village where most of the rapes took place.
He went on to film their abuse of his wife and meticulously store the images and films on a hard drive. He was found out by chance after being arrested in a supermarket for upskirting in 2020.
Pelicot can apply for conditional release but could stay in jail for longer -
Dominique P?licots conviction carries a two-thirds prison sentence, and his situation will have to be re-examined at the end of his sentence for possible prison detention, the court said.
That means he could apply for a conditional release once two-thirds of his sentence has completed. However, he could be kept in prison for longer as he is deemed a threat.
Pelicots sentence is as expected given that he had pleaded guilty, telling the court: I?m a rapist, like everyone else in this room

Gis?le Pelicot knew the father of six who lived a short distance away from her home. She would sometimes say hello to him at the local bakery.
He was a builder and once he came over to chat to her then-husband, Dominique Pelicot, about cycling.
What she didn't know was that wouldn't be the only time he visited her home.
Simone M. is just one of more than 70 men who was recruited online by Dominique Pelicot to rape his then-wife while she lay drugged and almost comatose on their bed.
Fifty of these men have now been sentenced to between three and 15 years in prison on various charges including rape, attempted rape and sexual assault.
Eleven other men who allegedly assaulted Gis?le Pelicot remain unidentified.
Simone M., 43, was sentenced to nine years in prison for his crimes.
Under French law, those found guilty are entitled to anonymity until after the 10-day appeal window has passed.
For almost a decade, Dominique Pelicot got away with his heinous crimes. Gis?le was oblivious.
Years later, when Gis?le Pelicot steeled herself to watch some of the 20,000 horrific videos and photographs documenting her own abuse collected by Dominique Pelicot, Simone M. would be the only man the grandmother recognised.
Most of the others lived within 50 kilometres of her home in the French town of Mazan.
Her husband had orchestrated it all.

Speaking after the sentences were handed down in Avignon on Thursday, she said she "never regretted" making the trial public.
"I want any woman who wakes up one morning with no memories of the night before to remember what I said, so that no more women can fall prey," she told the court during the trial.
Abuse That Started at Dinner
In the evening, Dominique Pelicot would often cook dinner for his wife and bring her ice cream before bed.
"I used to say to him: how lucky am I, you're a darling, you really look after me," Gis?le Pelicot told the court.
But between 2011 and 2020, he crushed sedatives into her food or slipped them into her drink.
Meticulous Planning of MASS RAPE
While she slept, Dominique would take her pyjamas off, dress her in lingerie and allow men, sometimes more than one per night, to come to their house and assault her, often while she snored, and he filmed.
On her body, he would write degrading comments.
On the chest of drawers visible in some videos, smiling faces in family photos watched on.
No day was off limits. Gis?le was assaulted on her birthday, Valentine's Day and on New Year's Eve.
No place was sacred. She was once assaulted in her daughters bed in her beach house.
Meticulous measures were taken to avoid Gis?le finding out.
Dominique asked the men not to smell of alcohol, perfume or cigarettes.
After the men left, Dominique would bath her and put her pyjamas back on.
Gis?le would wake up not knowing what horrors had been inflicted on her while she slept.
But there were signs something was very wrong.
One time she looked in the mirror and did not recognise the haircut she had just received.
Another time, she noticed bleach marks on her trousers but had no memory of how they got there. Some days she would sleep for 18 hours, overcome with fatigue.
She became increasingly convinced she had a brain tumour or had developed Alzheimers, but tests from doctors kept coming back negative.
There were physical signs too.
"I consulted three gynaecologists. Several times I had woken up and felt like I had lost my waters ? as happens when you give birth," she told the court.
"The signs were there, but I never knew how to decode them."
Through it all, she was grateful for her supportive husband who would accompany her to appointments and reassure her.
Today, Gis?le is dealing with the trauma of her experiences and the consequences of four sexually-transmitted diseases.
