China has emerged as a growing military force in recent years as its navy and air force expands their presence from the country’s shores.

Beijing's naval ships have showed up in international waters near Alaska, most recently in mid-July when the Coast Guard spotted four ships in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends 200 nautical miles from the shore.

China, which has raised international concerns over human rights violations, has backed Russia politically in the conflict in Ukraine and has continued to export machine tools, electronics and other items seen as contributing to the Russian war effort, without actually exporting weaponry.

But it has officially remained neutral in the conflict, though declared a “no limits” relationship with Russia. Russia and China have previously held joint military drills.

A US fighter jet has intercepted Russian and Chinese bombers just miles from the Alaskan coast in what's been described as a "first" for the partnership of global superpowers.

The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) said it detected and tracked two Russian TU-95 and two Chinese H-6 military aircraft that were operating in the Alaska Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Wednesday. Fighter jets from Canada and the United States intercepted the four aircrafts.

It comes amid increased fears in the West about closer military co-operation between the two nations.

The Chinese and Russian military activity on Wednesday was not seen as a threat, NORAD said. “NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence,” the command said in a news release.
