US Military Downed a High-Altitude Object’ Over Alaska

US President Joe Biden ordered a fighter jet to shoot down an unidentified "high-altitude object" off Alaska on Friday, the White House says.

Speaking at the White House on Friday, Mr Kirby said the debris field of the object shot down on Friday was "much, much smaller" than the balloon shot down last Saturday off the coast of South Carolina.

He said that the object was flying at 40,000ft (12,000m) over the northern coast of Alaska.

It had already flown across Alaska at a speed of 20 to 40mph (64km/h) and was out over the sea travelling towards the North Pole, when it was shot down.

Commercial airlines can fly as high as 45,000ft.

Helicopters and transport aircraft have been deployed to collect debris from the frozen waters of the Beaufort Sea.

"We do not know who owns it, whether it's state owned or corporate owned or privately owned," Mr Kirby said.

The object was first spotted on Thursday night, though officials did not specify a time.

Canada and US Military Shoot Down NEW Unidentified Object

Another unidentified object has been shot down over North American airspace, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed.

Both Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled to track down the object which Mr Trudeau says was taken out by a US F-22.

He said the latest object "violated Canadian airspace" and was shot down over Yukon in north west Canada.

Mr Trudeau says he gave the order and he spoke with US President Joe Biden.

"Canadian forces will now recover and analyse the wreckage of the object," he wrote on Twitter.

He thanked the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) which earlier said it had been monitoring "a high-altitude airborne object" over northern Canada. NORAD carries out air defence for the US and Canada.

The White House said the object has been tracked and monitored "over the last 24 hours".

"Out of an abundance of caution and at the recommendation of their militaries, President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau authorised it to be taken down," it said.

"The leaders discussed the importance of recovering the object in order to determine more details on its purpose or origin."

Giving more details on the mission to take down the object, the US Department of Defense confirmed two F-22 jets took off from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska and the object was shot down with an AIM 9X missile.

Pentagon Press Secretary Brig Gen Pat Ryder said although Canadian authorities will conduct recovery operations, the FBI will be "working closely" with Canadian police.

It is not clear what the object is.

But, its appearance over North America comes just a week after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was .

On Friday another object was shot down over Alaska at the orders of US President Biden.

In a short statement, the military said US troops, including from the Alaska National Guard, were still conducting search and recovery activities on sea ice for Friday's object.

It said it had no further details about the object's capabilities, purpose or origin but confirmed the FBI is helping with the recovery near the Alaskan town of Deadhorse.

"Arctic weather conditions, including wind chill, snow, and limited daylight, are a factor in this operation, and personnel will adjust recovery operations to maintain safety," it added - and that the rescue operation will continue as weather permits.

The latest incident comes a week after the American military destroyed a Chinese balloon off the coast of South Carolina.

China has denied the balloon - which first entered US airspace on 28 January - was used for spying purposes, saying it was a weather device gone astray.

The US, however, said the balloon is part of a fleet of surveillance balloons that have flown over five continents.

The balloon incident has strained US-China relations, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken cancelling a planned trip to Beijing.

Chinese officials on Friday accused the US of "political manipulation and hype".

China denied the object was used for spying and said it was a weather monitoring device that had been blown astray. The incident - and the angry exchanges in its aftermath - ratcheted up tensions between Washington and Beijing.

But on Sunday, a defence official said the US had communicated with Beijing about the first object after receiving no response for several days. It was not immediately clear what was discussed.

Since that first incident, American fighter jets have shot down three further high-altitude objects in as many days.

Later on Sunday, the US Air Force general overseeing North American airspace said it still wasn't clear how the objects were being propelled through the air or where they were coming from.

He also said he had not ruled any explanation out - including extraterrestrial life. "I'll let the intel community and the counterintelligence community figure that out," Gen Glen VanHerck told reporters when asked about the possibility.

One senior official told ABC News that the three most recent objects to be shot down were likely weather devices and not surveillance balloons.

But this was contradicted by the top Democrat in Congress, who earlier told the broadcaster that intelligence officials believed the objects were in fact surveillance balloons.

"They believe they were [balloons], yes," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, adding that they were "much smaller" than the first one shot down off the South Carolina coast.

Democrat Debbie Dingell, one of several Michigan members of Congress who applauded the military for downing the object over the state on Sunday, joined growing calls for the White House and defence officials to provide more information.

"We need the facts about where they are originating from, what their purpose is, and why their frequency is increasing," she said.

Democratic Senator Jon Tester, who represents Montana, told the BBC's US partner CBS: "What's gone on the last two weeks or so... has been nothing short of craziness. And the military needs to have a plan to not only determine what's out there, but determine the dangers."

Republicans have repeatedly criticised the Biden administration for its handling of the first suspected spy balloon, saying it should have been shot down far sooner.

Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the UK would conduct a security review following the recent incidents in the US and Canada. "This development is another sign of how the global threat picture is changing for the worse," he said.

He claimed that Beijing is operating a "balloon programme for intelligence collection" that has ties to the Chinese military and was not detected during the Trump administration.
