Brits Can Soon Take a New Sleeper Train Straight to Berlin From London

The new European Sleeper service will launch in May and will link up London St Pancras, Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin in just over 12 hours without breaking the bank

BBC News 31 DEC 2022

Rail lovers will soon be able to hop on a train in London in the afternoon and arrive in Berlin the following morning.

A new sleeper service is being launched in May which will link up the English and German capitals with just one change.

Not only does the route offer a quick and much more environmentally friendly alternative to flying, it won't necessarily break the bank.

One way prices from Brussels to Berlin will start from £43 for a seat.

Those who want to travel in a little more comfort and style can pay from £70 each way for a couchette (basic padded bunk) in a six-berth compartment.

Alternatively a one bed room can be yours from £280 for a return ticket.

There are tickets on the London to Brussels Eurostar route starting at £39, so the entire journey could be done for £164, which compares very favourably with most flights between the two capitals.

Passengers on the European Sleeper service will only need to make one change - in Brussels - when it launches on May 25.

The scheduling of the route means that there is enough time to grab a Belgian beer in the EU hub before hopping on the second train.

Ticket sales will start on February 20 in preparation for the launch of its first overnight service from Brussels via Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Deventer to Berlin on May 25.

Once it is fully up and running the service will depart Brussels Midi at 7.22pm and Amsterdam Centraal at 10.34pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving at Berlin Main Station at 6.48am the following morning.

The return service departs from Berlin at 10.56pm on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, arriving in Amsterdam at 6.31am and Brussels at 9.27am.

The journey from Brussels to London takes two hours.

The two cities will be linked up by the overnight service

Breakfast is included in the price of tickets, and bicycles and pets can be carried on the train.

Next year looks to be a particularly good one for fans of long distance rail journeys across the Continent.

European Sleeper has plans to extend the service from Berlin to Dresden and Prague in December 2023, Rail Journal reports.

The company wants to run the route daily from 2024, as well as launching other overnight services from Brussels and Amsterdam to Scandinavia and Barcelona.
