Thumbs down Man Viciously Beat Woman, Dragged Her Naked into Woods & Left Her to DIE

Man Beat Woman He Met on Night Out -For 50 Minutes, Then Left Her Naked in The Woods'

Matthew Stevens has admitted dragging a woman he'd just met that evening deep into Newcastle woodland where he launched a vicious physical assault, but denies attempted murder

BBC 6 DEC 2022

A man attacked and tried to kill a woman he met on a night out after he allegedly dragged her naked into the woods, a court heard.

Matthew Stevens met the victim, an unnamed woman in her 30s from Gateshead, during a night out in Newcastle city centre on March 10, this year.

In the early hours of the next day, they shared a taxi which dropped them off close to Stevens’ home in Brunswick Village, Newcastle, ChronicleLive reported.

CCTV captured them walking together through the streets, but then there’s a haunting 50 minute gap before he’s spotted again on camera.

During this time, Stevens is alleged to have stripped her to just her socks, dragged her to the woods and brutally attacked her - even taking her jewellery as a ‘trophy’ Newcastle Crown Court heard.

By the time she was discovered by a dog walker around 6am, the woman was barely conscious in the woods close to the A1, and was suffering from hypothermia

Stevens has admitted responsibility for the attack, pleading guilty to wounding with intent but he denies attempted murder.

Gavin Doig, prosecuting, said that Stevens had tried to murder the woman and that her face had been ‘grossly swollen’ with her bleeding in both eyeballs as well as suffering multiple lacerations to her face.

She also had fractures to her face and a punctured lung.

The court heard that the victim, who has since recovered from the horrific injuries, won’t be giving evidence as she has no memory of the night in question.

She had gone out that night with a male friend and they went to Bobby's Bar, where Stevens also happened to arrive with a friend. The two friends knew each other and Stevens and the victim got chatting and exchanged numbers.

They then took a taxi shortly before 3am, with the driver saying she was drunker than he was. He added that she wanted to go home but Stevens directed the cab to Wideopen.

After exiting the cab they were last spotted together at 3:16am before Stevens was seen 50 minutes later.

Mr Doig said: "We say this is a sustained attack, not a brief loss of temper. 50 minutes is a long time."

The court heard there were two scenes of crime. At the first, the woman's clothes were found, including her damaged bra and ripped knickers - which "looked as if they had been rolled down by someone else" - as well as other clothes she had been wearing, some of her hair and her phone.

Prosecutors say she was then dragged or carried to the second crime scene, in the wooded area.

Mr Doig said: "The prosecution case is, having attacked her at scene one and stripped her clothing from her, he then drags or carries her to the more concealed wooded area, much further from the road and further from houses and the footpath.

"The purpose of moving her, we say, was to continue the attack and, we say, to complete the attack and thinking her body would be less likely to be found or found quickly if it was moved away from the road and in an area of waste ground near the A1."

The dog walker only discovered her when his dog showed an interest in the undergrowth of the woodland.

Mr Doig said: "He looked in and heard the sound of moaning as if a person was in pain. He saw a naked woman in this wooded, brambled area.

“He said she turned her head towards him but her eyes were so swollen he couldn't tell if they were closed or open. She was completely naked apart from her socks."

Her shoes were found to have clean soles but muddy sides and back, which prosecutors say supports their contention she was dragged from the first scene to the second.

The court heard at the second scene, her blood was on a tree trunk, the pattern of which suggested she had been stamped on while already bleeding heavily. Stevens' trainers were also said to have her blood on the them, consistent with stamping and kicking into a bleeding area.

There was also blood on his coat consistent with punching her when she was already bleeding, the jury were told.

Police also found some of the charms from her bracelet had fallen out and they later found the bracelet hidden inside a pair of socks in Stevens' wardrobe.

When Stevens was arrested he had scratches on his hands consistent with being caused in the undergrowth.

He initially denied responsibility, blaming a man in a red BMW but he has since admitted he was the attacker.

He now says she tried to head over a field, he tried to stop her, they argued, she hit him and he lost his temper and inflicted the injuries. However he denies undressing her or stamping on her and claims she was conscious when he left her.

Stevens denies attempted murder. The trial continues.
