Libyan Dictator Moammar Gadhafi Is Dead, Libya's Prime Minister Says

By HUMA KHAN | AP. 20 October 2011

Libyan dictator, Moammar Gadhafi, the most wanted man in the world, has been killed, Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said today.

The flamboyant tyrant who terrorized his country and much of the world during his 42 years of despotic rule was reportedly cornered by insurgents in the town of Sirte, where Gadhafi had been born and a stronghold of his supporters.
"We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed," Jibril said at a news conference in Tripoli.
He added that the rebel government will wait until later today or Friday to officially declare what it calls a state of liberation.

The National Transition Council earlier today said that its fighters found and shot Gadhafi in Sirte, which finally fell to the rebels today after weeks of tough fighting. Rebels now control the entire country.
Word of Gadhafi's death triggered celebrations in the streets of Tripoli with insurgent fighters waving their weapons and dancing jubilantly.

Al Jazeera aired video of what appeared to be the dead leader, which showed Gadhafi lying in a pool of blood in the street, shirtless, and surrounded by people.
Libya's Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam told the Associated Press that Gadhafi was in a convoy when he was attacked by rebels.
NATO said that its jet fighters struck a convoy of Gadhafi's loyalists fleeing Sirte this morning, but could not confirm that Gadhafi was in the convoy, the Associated Press reported.

Gadhafi had been on the run for weeks after being chased out of the capital Tripoli by NATO bombers and rebel troops.

He had been believed to be hiding in the vast Libyan desert while calling on his supporters to rise up and sweep the rebel "dogs" away, but his once fearsome power was scoffed at by Libyans who had ransacked his palace compound and hounded him into hiding..........

Libyans tear down Gadhafi compound

Libyan revolutionary forces bulldozed the green walls surrounding Moammar Gadhafi's main Tripoli compound on Oct. 16, saying it was time "to tear down this symbol of tyranny."

Gadhafi, 69, ruled Libya with an iron fist for almost 42 years. He seized control of Libya in Sept., 1969 in a bloodless coup when he was just 27 years old. The then young and dashing army captain and his small band of military officers overthrew the monarch King Idris, setting up a new Libyan Arab Republic that over the years became increasingly isolated from the rest of the world.

Gadhafi took over the top spot as the world's most wanted man after Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. troops in Pakistan.

At the height of his ability to threaten terrorism, President Ronald Reagan dubbed Gadhafi the "mad dog of the Middle East."
He was accused of backing the 1986 bombing of a Berlin disco popular with American soldiers, reportedly funding the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985, and the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which resulted in the U.N. and United States imposing sanctions on Libya.

For years, Gadhafi refused to take responsibility for the bombing, but that changed in 2003 when he acknowledged his role and tried to make amends.
The eccentric leader, who amassed power and wealth by controlling the nation's oil industry, held the title of being the longest-serving leader in Africa and the Arab world.

Over the years, Gadhafi earned a reputation for his outlandish apparel and much-ridiculed phobias and proclivities.
Gadhafi was described as a "mercurial and eccentric figure who suffers from severe phobias, enjoys flamenco dancing and horse racing, acts on whims and irritates friends and enemies alike."
He was "obsessively dependent on a small core of trusted personnel," especially his longtime Ukrainian nurse Galyna, who has been described as a "voluptuous blonde," according to the cables.

Among his other unusual behaviors, the Libyan leader reportedly feared flying over water, didn't like staying on upper floors and traveled with a "pistol packing' posse" of female bodyguards.

WARNING THE FOLLOWING VIDEO is GRAPHIC

The Libyans who found and killed him, reported that his last words when they found him hiding in a sewage tunnel were;

Quote:
What have I ever done to you?
Yeah right "MAD GAD", I bet the poor relatives of all the murdered people you killed have been asking the same question for years...... They never got an answer,,, and neither did you.

Now you will never know, enjoy your time in HELL!

Note;
The truthful reports on this thread came from Al Jazeera and the BBC.

Gadhafi was NOT killed by an American air strike, as is being claimed by the US media, he was killed by his own people.

What a farce.... Funny how these "rebels" show up shortly after Gadhafi started trying to create a strong, backed central currency for Africa. They come in with brand new arms, set up their own central bank in like a week.... Am I the only one who finds that strange?

Nope. But it was some of his own hired killers, mercenaries from other parts of Africa, that were supposed to have turned on him and killed him, so many different rumours. The rest of them that were still supporting him, were beaten to death by the crowd. I will try to find pics of that.

Gaddafi: Death of an Era, Dawn of an Era

Gaddafi's death is symbolic of the death of an old paradigm that no longer has a place in today's world.

Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, seen by many as a relic of the past, is a symbol of what no longer works in Libya, says author [REUTERS]

First accounts are almost never correct, but if the circumstances of Libyan Col. Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi's death prove to be as reported, they will provide yet another, final irony in a life replete with them. The man whose success relied upon a combination of great-power manipulation and the ability to sustain the fantasy that he embodied the aspirations of his people succumbed in the end to a combination of great-power military intervention and the genuine aspiration of his people for a future free of his vicious domination.

Gaddafi's passing brings with it a welter of thoughts and observations. The world of 1969, when he first came to power, was very different from the world in which he died. It was a far simpler world, in which it was still possible for a handful of officers, led by one Captain Gaddafi, embedded in a puny, 6,000-man army, to overthrow a supposedly entrenched regime in a matter of two hours. The regime of King Idris was swept aside in part due to its irrelevance in an age of Pan-Arab nationalist revolution. Now, in our own time, the death of Gaddafi provides an exclamation point to the end of the succeeding era of supposed revolutionary renewal, the last vestiges of which are succumbing to the rising floodwaters of the Arab Spring.

In the valley of the blind, it is said, the one-eyed man is king. Gaddafi may have had an imperfect grasp, at best, of the revolutionary doctrines he espoused, but he reflected for a small, impoverished and isolated people the zeitgeist of 1960s and ‘70s leftist revolution and romantic pan-Arab socialism of his time. Like all such "revolutionaries", Gaddafi's avowed populism and devotion to equality were a sham. Instead, he and his Revolutionary Command Council would act as the "vehicle of national expression", in order to "raise the political consciousness of Libyans". He would embody the will of the Libyan people only after their will had been sufficiently instructed by their "Brother Leader".

One might have said of Gaddafi, in paraphrase, what Henry Kissinger once said of Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus: He was too great a man for such a small nation. Apparently much of the same opionion, Gaddafi quickly set about using Libya as a secure and easily-dominated platform from which to pursue far greater ambitions abroad. He shortly began to bestow the benefit of his world revolutionary leadership - and, more pointedly, his considerable petrodollar income - upon a smorgasbord of radical leftist, terrorist and separatist groups around the globe: From the IRA in Ireland, to the Baader-Meinhof Gang in Germany, to the FARC in Colombia, to the Moro National Liberation Front in the Philippines.

Curiously for one so rhetorically devoted to the cause of Palestinians, Gaddafi's relations with Palestinians themselves were generally wary and marginal. It cannot have been an accident that his most sustained relationship with a Palestinian group was with one almost unimaginably dysfunctional, internally murderous and sociopathic: The Abu Nidal Group.
Finding his brilliance sadly underappreciated among his fellow Arab leaders, despite his endless political manoeuvering, Gaddafi soon devoted the majority of his considerable energies upon the black African countries to his south, where poverty, political weakness and endemic religio-ethnic conflict provided a much more attractive forum for the Libyan Colonel's idiosyncratic combination of whimsical ideological fads, cynically selective philanthropy and Lilliputian military adventurism.

Gaddafi's scars on Libya

But nowhere were the consequences of Gaddafi's unique combination of pathologies more disastrously in evidence than in Libya itself. A little knowledge, they say, is a dangerous thing. To the longstanding cost of the Libyan people, Gaddafi managed to cobble together a collection of bits and pieces from his sophomoric understanding of the great ideologies and philosophical traditions of the modern era, sufficient to create his own crack-brained "Third International Theory", which found its practical expression in the Great Socialist Popular Libyan Arab Jamahiriyah. The administrative chaos and social atomisation created by some 2,000 overlapping "people's committees" created an environment perhaps uniquely susceptible to domination by the Brother Leader's signature combination of political manipulation and brutal intimidation.
Despite his professed lifelong aversion to Communism, the wily and ambitious colonel from Sirte was able to consistently manipulate cold-war and great-power rivalries to his benefit. He was thus able to acquire huge stocks of weapons from his Soviet and East-Bloc friends without ever subordinating himself to their ambitions, but most importantly, he was able to harness the expertise of the East Germans in one skill area critical to his long-term survival: social repression. This writer had a great deal of contact with people from many Arab countries during the 1980s and 1990s, but nowhere did he encounter a people so thoroughly cowed and intimidated in those years as the Libyans. The life of a Libyan official or anyone in a position to harm the interests of the regime was life in a snake-pit. Brother could not trust brother. In any group of three, at least one would have to be assumed by the others to be a regime informant.
In retrospect, it seems that Gaddafi's great turn to the West in 2003, when he accepted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing, divulged so-called WMD programmes, and began to cooperate on counter-terrorism, was a sign that the end was nigh. Tired now, and focused on transferring power to his sons, Gaddafi could no longer claim to be in the ideological vanguard of the region, let alone the world. Nasserist Arab nationalism had run its course, and had long since been replaced by Islamism as the leading political current in the region, posing a direct threat to him and his intolerantly secular regime. A manipulator to the last, Gaddafi was willing to deal with his long-time enemies in the West in order to better preserve his power at home.

This marriage of convenience was never a comfortable one, based as it was on a very limited and highly tactical convergence of interests. Such cooperation might have been justifiable under the circumstances, and indeed was supported by this writer, but must also be acknowledged for what it was: An accommodation to an unfortunate reality in a highly imperfect world. Some might have thought that the opening between Libya and the West was a potential means of eventual reform, that the transition to the younger elements of the Gaddafi clan might carry with it the possibility of an evolving accommodation to the people's legitimate rights and wishes. What it signalled instead was a turn to the defensive, as a hideously outmoded and incorrigible regime found itself swimming against multiple tides of history.

A regime such as Gaddafi's is almost unimaginable now in all but the most regressive portions of the globe. A world in which street-sweepers have cell phones, where even the most humble citizens are intimately connected to a wider world, is one in which a bizarre historical artefact like the Gaddafi regime could never survive. The fact that he is finally gone will not by itself enable Libyans to realise their most ambitious and noble aspirations, but it must be seen for what it is: A necessary, if insufficient, start.

In Pictures: Gaddafi's Intelligence Compound

A look inside deposed leader's intelligence agency headquarters in Tripoli and the trove of secret files left behind.

Al Jazeera recently gained access to the Tripoli headquarters of Libya's intelligence agency where we uncovered evidence that influential Americans tried to help the now-deposed Libyan leader cling to power.
The intelligence compound was used by Abdullah Senussi - Muammar Gaddafi's brother-in-law and director of military intelligence, who is now wanted by the International Criminal Court.
Targeted multiple times by NATO jets, it now sits empty, guarded by a few rebel soldiers with stacks of files, equipment and images of Gaddafi inside.
Guided by an anxious rebel guard, Al Jazeera's Evan Hill photographs remnants of the once-feared building - now a symbol of how Gaddafi's regime has been all but toppled.

1) The headquarters of Muammar Gaddafi's intelligence services sits burned and destroyed in central Tripoli

2) The precision of NATO air strikes was evident. The building on the left has collapsed while for the other on the right, the rooms were all intact with only the windows blown out

3) This building, where the accountant's office is located, was relatively undamaged by air strikes. Its rooms had instead been broken apart by people searching through cabinets and closets.

4) This building has suffered a direct hit from a NATO strike, blowing all the way through to the basement.

5) Inside the building, the precision damage is obvious.

6) A hastily taped-up sign in front of the higher-ranking officers' hallway reads: "Entry Forbidden".

7) Several old portraits of Gaddafi sit on the floor in one of the high-ranking officers' rooms.

8) At an accountant's office, someone had attempted to physically rip apart a stack of files.

9) Rows of files sit on shelves in the accountant's office. In neighbouring rooms, Al Jazeera found minutes of apparent meetings between Libyan officials and former US diplomats, a list of official greetings from foreign embassies to the Libyan military intelligence service and a folder marked Musa Sadr - an Iranian Shia leader who infamously disappeared in Libya in 1978. The Sadr file was quickly taken away by guards.

10) Much of the paperwork in this office, strangely, dealt with the Libyan Arabian Horse Breeders Society. These boxes held files mostly on business dealings with the Society.

11) A catalogue from a weapons manufacturer in Belarus is on the floor of one office.

12) Three VHS tapes are spotted atop a filing cabinet. One appears to contain footage of a MiG-29, a 1980s Russian fighter that apparently had never been used by Libya in its air force.

13) Large satellite images of Libyan cities, measuring roughly one metre by one metre, are left abandoned in the hallway outside an office. The images included Sirte, Bin Jawwad, Sidra, Sultan, Nawfaliya.

14) Inside the foyer of another building, bags of carefully shredded paper sat stacked in a corner, piled with food scraps and coffee cups

15) In an officer's office, more bags of shredded paper sit in a corner next to a shredder and an ashtray

16) One photo managed to stay hanging on a wall: a photo of Gaddafi meeting Nelson Mandela

Lockerbie 1988 Bombing Suspect in US Custody

A Libyan man accused of making the bomb which destroyed Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie 34 years ago is in United States custody, Scottish authorities have said.

BBC 12 DEC 2022.

Abu Agila Masud, front row centre, behind bars in Libya

The US announced charges against Abu Agila Masud two years ago, alleging he had played a key role in the bombing on 21 December, 1988.

The blast on board the Boeing 747 left 270 people dead.

It is the deadliest terrorist incident to have taken place on British soil.

All 259 passengers and crew on board the jumbo jet bound to New York from London died while another 11 people were killed in Lockerbie when wreckage destroyed their homes.

Last month it was reported that Mr Masud had been kidnapped by a militia group in Libya, leading to speculation that he was going to be handed over to the American authorities to stand trial.

A US Justice Department spokesperson told the Reuters news agency that the suspect would make an initial appearance in a federal court in Washington.

Five years ago he was serving a prison sentence in Libya for bomb-making.

In 2001 Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of bombing Pan Am 103 after standing trial at a specially convened Scottish court in the Netherlands.

He was the only man to be convicted over the attack.

Megrahi was jailed for life but was released on compassionate grounds by the Scottish government in 2009 after being diagnosed with cancer.

He died in Libya in 2012.

Newsnight's Kirsty Wark recalls arriving at Lockerbie on the night of 21 December 1988

It is alleged that while in jail in Libya, Mr Masud confessed to being involved in the conspiracy with Megrahi to blow up the flight.

Aamer Anwar, Megrahi's lawyer, said Mr Masud was actually in the custody of a warlord "widely condemned for human rights abuses" - he said the circumstances in which such a confession was extracted would be "strongly opposed" in any US or Scottish court.

Megrahi, who always proclaimed his innocence, launched two appeals against his 27-year sentence. One was unsuccessful and the other was abandoned.

Analysis by David Cowan, Home Affairs Correspondent, BBC Scotland

In the 34 years since Pan Am 103 was brought down, the story of the Lockerbie bombing has taken many twists and turns.

The prospect of a first Lockerbie trial, let alone a second, seemed extremely unlikely until Nelson Mandela brokered a deal which led to two Libyan suspects being handed over to a Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands.

One of them was convicted of bombing the plane, but it was always the prosecution case that Abdelbaset al-Megrahi acted with others.

The collapse of Colonel Gaddafi's regime in 2011 raised hopes that more suspects could be brought before a court until the country fell back into violent political instability.

In 2020, the outgoing US Attorney General William Barr announced charges against Abu Agila Masud and behind the scenes, prosecutors at the Crown office, detectives from Police Scotland and their US counterparts continued to work on the case.

The announcement that Mr Masud is now in US custody means a second trial over the biggest mass murder in British legal history could now happen, under American rather than Scots law.

But many challenges lie ahead, not least the legal status of the suspect's alleged confession when he was held in prison in Libya.

Its contents also appear to undermine and strengthen the prosecution case against Megrahi.

As ever with this story, it's wise to expect the unexpected.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said: "The families of those killed in the Lockerbie bombing have been told that the suspect Abu Agila Mohammad Mas'ud Kheir Al-Marimi ("Mas'ud" or "Masoud") is in US custody.

"Scottish prosecutors and police, working with UK government and US colleagues, will continue to pursue this investigation, with the sole aim of bringing those who acted along with Al Megrahi to justice."

Police Scotland said it remained "deeply committed" to the investigation and to supporting the families and communities who suffered such devastating losses.

A spokesperson added: "We continue to work closely with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in Scotland, along with our partners within the UK government and the authorities in the United States, in supporting the continued pursuit of justice against those responsible"
