Nico Rosberg Sweeps to Pole Ahead of Lewis Hamilton in Canadian Grand Prix
Mercedes' Rosberg narrowly beat his team-mate to lead the grid in Montreal, at what is considered Hamilton's quickest course
Blurred lines: Nico Rosberg shows off his speed in Canada

This was not the result anyone, perhaps even Nico Rosberg, had expected. If the casting of favourites is often wearisome guesswork, then here in Montreal Lewis Hamilton deservedly occupies that status, with three victories to his name. But the formbook was turned on its head as Rosberg brilliantly swept to pole position ahead of his Mercedes team-mate for the Canadian Grand Prix.
On this occasion there was nothing to dispute and Hamilton was gracious in defeat. If we needed any confirmation that the World Championship is to be an epic tussle, this was it.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is supposed to be a Lewis Hamilton circuit, making Rosberg's seventh career pole a significant feather in his cap. The German rocked up in what is effectively Hamilton's backyard and beat him.
It was a stunning effort, setting up what should be an enthralling race.
No question, it is a sizeable blow for Hamilton to come second to Rosberg on the Circuit Īle Notre-Dame. More than any other track this is his playground.
Race of champions: Lewis Hamilton

All eyes will continue to be focused on
Lewis Hamilton and
Nico Rosberg in Montreal today to ascertain whether they have patched up their differences and are focused on doing their all for Mercedes. They put on a united front during qualifying yesterday where Rosberg pipped his 'buddy' to pole, but will they celebrate together on the podium this evening when they, as expected, complete another one-two for Mercedes?
