Let the Games begin! Winter Olympics gets underway in Sochi with spectacular opening ceremony featuring flying children, failed snowflakes, fantastic fireworks...


The 22nd instalment of the Winter Olympic Games has started in spectacular fashion with the most expensively assembled opening ceremony in the history of the Winter Games.

An estimated 2,500 athletes from 88 nations will compete in 98 events across 15 disciplines, from Alpine skiing to biathlon and from snowboarding to speed skating.
Prior to those events, however, there were literally fireworks as Sochi welcomed the world. The night skyline of the Olympic Park was illuminated by a mesmersing display of pyrotechnics that began proceedings with a bang.

The opening ceremony started with a small girl flying giving an alphabetical history of Russia before flying through the air suspended by wires over a collection of floating islands featuring animatronic wolves and reindeer, which we were told depicts a journey across the country.
Five enormous illuminated snowflakes were then supposed to transform into the famous five-ringed Olympic symbol - except the final snowflake failed to blossom causing slight embarrassment for the organisers.

Athletes arrived on the stadium floor through a molten world map, with John Eley leading out Britian's team while flying the Union Jack - closely followed by Germany who were wearing perhaps the most garish outfits on show, which in this company is an accomplishment worthy of a medal istelf.
