Peruvian police said 51 people, including 14 children, died when the cargo truck they were using as a bus drove off a cliff and fell 650 feet into the Chaupimayo river. The group—comprised of all Quechuan Indians—was returning from a party in Santa Teresa.
The poorly maintained roads along the Peruvian Andes are known for deadly accidents, which last year claimed 4,000 lives. A local mayor said rural farmers in the area often use makeshift forms of transportation in the absence of public transit. In the week before the crash, 39 people died in two separate accidents.
