The body of escaped Hells Angel René Charlebois was found during a provincial police operation at a residence in Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel, Que., according to CBC's French-language broadcaster Radio-Canada.
Officers with the Sûreté du Québec tactical squad went to a residence on l'île aux Fantômes at 1:15 a.m. today to carry out an arrest warrant, according to Montreal police spokesman, Const. Raphael Bergeron.
"When they went to arrest this man, he was found dead inside his residence. At this time, the investigation was transferred due to the intervention, but basically no fired shots, nothing from what I was advised," said Bergeron.
Montreal police are investigating the death of Charlebois, 48, who escaped from a minimum-security prison in Laval, Que., on the night of Sept. 14.
Charlebois was a high-ranking member of the Hells Angels Nomads chapter and had been incarcerated at the Montée St-François Institution since 2003 for, among other charges, killing a police informant.
The Ministry of Public Security has ordered an independent investigation and Montreal police said they will meet all those involved in the operation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police said the arrest warrant was issued for somebody inside the residence.
