Thousands of fans are threatening to boycott the opening match of the World Cup amid a dispute over stadium access. Owners of executive boxes at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City say they have faced severe restrictions on selling their seats and supplying food afood and drinks to those attending the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa and subsequent matches.

Over 15,000 seats in the recently revamped 87,000-capacity venue are affected. The problem stems from FIFA's demand to take full control of stadiums for the tournament, a practice it has maintained since the 1998 World Cup.

However, when the ground was completely rebuilt in 1966, boxes were sold with unrestricted rights for 99 years. Those rights included all sporting events and music concerts, including the 1970 and 1986 World Cups.

However, box owners, unhappy about the restrictions placed upon them for the tournament, are threatening to take action, including boycotts and protests supported by the National Coordinator of Education Workers union if positive talks dont take place.
