The International Olympic Committee was forced to ask fans not to boo the U.S. delegation led by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio during Fridays opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina Winter Games.

The Department of Homeland Security sparked an international outcry last week when it confirmed that members of ICEs Homeland Security Investigations unit would help provide security for the Games.

Italians have been shocked by images of ICE and Border Patrol agents pepper spraying protesters, breaking into peoples homes, arresting children, and shooting and killing U.S. citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, sparking protests, petitions, and demands from opposition lawmakers that Trump thugs be denied entry to Italy.

HOW DOES ONE CHEER Team USAs premier athletes when America is in the grips of an authoritarian attempting to entrench himself in power? With the Winter Olympics in Italy upon us and the World Cup looming this summer, sports fans will soon face precisely this challenge.

We will have to find a way to support athletes without seeing that support co opted by a president who claims nearly everything for himself, from prizes he did not earn to legal authorities he does not possess. It will be a test for our athletes, as well.

International sports are an opportunity for athletic competition and excellence, a celebration of national pride, and, more often than the International Olympic Committee might like to admit, soaked in politics.
