The abuse hurled at Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry at the Ryder Cup on Saturday was so unpleasant that even family members of the American team were squirming in disgust.

It is a shame the quality of golf on show will be a footnote in the history books following the deplorable behaviour of some spectators.
