Shabana Mahmood, who in Sir Keir Starmers reshuffle was appointed the first female Muslim Home Secretary, will take on Reform and the Tories by articulating a tougher line on illegal migration.
As Justice Secretary, she impressed Downing Street with her handling of Labours first big crisis with prison overcrowding last summer and then closing down a row over two tier justice by slapping down the Sentencing Council.
After a summer of protests against asylum policy, polls suggest the public has lost faith in the Governments ability to handle the small boats crisis.
She has coped with the prison crisis pretty well without a drastic kind of backlash. Now its about getting Shabana in that position to try to claw back some of the ground that Labour has lost on immigration..She will be able to deliver some tough messages around immigration because of her Pakistani heritage

Angela Rayner could struggle to pay the mortgage on her new GB800,000 home in Hove after having her salary slashed following her departure from Sir Keir Starmers Cabinet, it has been reported.
The axed Deputy Prime Minister will see her salary reduce from GB161,409 to GB93,904 as she loses the additional income she received while serving as Housing and Communities Secretary.
Ms Rayner also faces having to pay back the GB40,000 stamp duty she owes, plus interest, and her political rivals are calling on her to forfeit her GB16,876 severance payment.
Until yesterday, Ms Rayner had access to a lavish grace and favour Whitehall flat in Admiralty House, as well as her GB650,000 Ashton constituency home and a three bedroom LUXURY pad in Hove.
Ms Rayner had bought the seaside property for GB800,000 but failed to pay the correct amount of stamp duty, underpaying HMRC by roughly GB40,000 and LYING about it.
As a result of her 'carelessness' she resigned when a report by the Governments sleaze watchdog found she had broken the Ministerial Code.
She also resigned as Housing and Communities Secretary and quit her elected role as Labours deputy leader
