After flash floods devastated central Texas in July 2025, a rumour spread that U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, whose agency oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency, failed to authorize deployment of FEMA rescue teams for over 72 hours.
Trump Wants to Shut It DOWN
Trump is looking to make sweeping cuts at the nations weather agencies, including the closure of all federally funded meteorology labs, such as the National Severe Storms Laboratory.
They're facilities that experts credit for research that has saved countless lives.
The deadly flooding in Texas over the Fourth of July weekend underscored just how crucial it is to have adequate warning systems in place to anticipate natural disasters.
These facilities also support local economies. According to the University of Oklahoma, the federal lab in Norman helps sustain more than 900 jobs in the region.
The National Severe Storms Laboratory sits on a campus of radar equipment and office buildings at the University of Oklahoma, off State Highway 9 in Norman. Its responsible for radar breakthroughs in forecasting that the nation relies on for storm warnings and emergency preparedness.
But Trump wants to shut it down, prompting a rare rebuke from a prominent Republican member of Congress.
I want to make sure that whoevers proposing this actually goes down there and looks at it and meets them, said Oklahoma Rep. Tom Cole, chair of the Appropriations Committee. Ive allowed things in my district to be closed before, but this is a national asset, and I want to be very careful about what we do with it.
This would also affect the recent devastating floods in New Mexico
