Calls to proscribe group as terrorists after activists sprayed red paint into aircraft engines

Counter terror police are leading an investigation after Pro Palestinian activists allegedly damaged military aircraft at RAF Brize Norton.

Footage posted online by Palestine Action on Friday morning showed two people inside the air base, in Oxfordshire. The clip shows one person riding an electric scooter up to an Airbus Voyager air to air refuelling tanker and appearing to spray paint into its jet engine.

A spokesman for Counter Terror Policing South East said: An incident at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire is now being investigated by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East.

In the early hours of today 20/6 offenders gained entry to the site and caused criminal damage to aircraft.

Specialist counter terrorism officers are working closely with officers from Thames Valley Police and the Ministry of Defence Police.

Robert Jenrick said Palestine Action should be proscribed as a terrorist organisation after the security breach. He joined other senior politicians in demanding that the group be banned over its illegal and extremist actions.

Mr Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, told Sir Keir Starmer You are the Prime Minister do something. Ban Palestine Action. Investigate the security breach.

He said This attack on Britains military is totally unjustified. They are undermining the very organisation that protects us all.

The incident raises serious questions about the security of RAF bases at a time of heightened tensions and state threats from Russia and Iran. Last year, British troops were deployed to several US air bases across England amid reports of multiple unidentified drones flying over their airspaces.

Palestine Action said its activists had used repurposed fire extinguishers to spray paint into the turbine engines of the planes, and used crowbars to cause further damage. They are also said to have sprayed red paint across the runway and left a Palestinian flag behind before escaping the base undetected.

Voyagers are air to air refuelling and transport aircraft. Described as a petrol station in the sky, they can carry up to 109 tonnes of fuel and are used to refuel fighter and compatible heavy aircraft.

RAF Brize Norton is one of 18 MoD sites at which trespass is a criminal offence. These sites, protected under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005, have been specifically designated in the interests of national security or are nuclear sites. Each is protected by armed security forces against terrorist threats.
