An old man was arrested for mistreatment and abuse of his two daughters in Juazeiro do Norte, Brazil

He has been accused of drugging his two daughters, before tying them to filthy mattresses and raping them over the course of several months.

The man 69, who was not named by police in Juazeiro do Norte, to protect the identity of his alleged victims, is alleged to have bound the sisters to dirty mattresses surrounded by human faeces and rotting rubbish.

Horrifying evidence collected by police in the state of Ceara, Brazil, included photos showing one daughter with her feet tied together with a makeshift hobble while another sister was seen comatose on a similar disturbingly stained bed.

Both sisters were very thin and were said to be suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration.

The pair were discovered during a police raid on May 5 after a tip off to police from a horrified neighbour. The sisters, aged 36 and 38, are now recovering in hospital.

Police claimed the father began raping them when their mother left the house for a hospital appointment a year ago and never came back. One neighbour said: I always suspected something was wrong, but we never imagined it was this horrific.

Their dad was taken to the citys Womens Defence Police Station, where he was charged with domestic violence, mistreatment, psychological violence, and unlawful imprisonment. He could also face rape charges once his daughters have been medically examined for signs of sexual abuse.

He reportedly told police had tied up his daughters to stop them falling out of their beds. According to Human Rights Watch, Brazil recorded the highest number of registered rape cases in its history in 2022.

The report from the Brazilian Public Security said 74,930 cases had been reported. It also founded more than 60 per cent of the cases, the survivor was under 14 years old.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case in the Republic of Ireland, a woman told a jury that she was raped by her uncle just before her sixth birthday while her own mother stood in the room and watched.

She told the court that following the rape, her mother lifted her from the bed in her uncles bedroom before moving her to another bed in a separate room.

The woman said she lived with her grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle and mother at the time and that she always shared a bed with her mother, the Irish Mirror previously reported.

Her mother, pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of sexual assault, and not guilty to one count of rape.

It has been alleged that the woman sexually assaulted the girl on nine occasions between 2000 and 2009 at the family home in Co. Mayo, on one occasion between 2012 and 2014 and on three occasions during a family holiday in Co. Kerry in 2021.
