Letting Asma al-Assad back in the UK for cancer treatment would be an affront to victims of the former dictator

Asma al-Assad and her husband have reportedly been confined to Moscow and their property assets had been frozen by authorities since seeking asylum there.

Reports in the Turkish media suggested she wanted to move back to the UK, where she holds dual nationality, for cancer treatment.

No 10 refused to comment on Sunday about whether she should be stripped of her passport.

But Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, said: It would be an affront to the millions of Assad?s victims if his wife returned to a life of luxury in the UK.

He added: She has been sanctioned by the UK Government for a reason ? the Assad family were responsible for some of the worst atrocities in modern times.

David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, has previously said Mrs Assad was not welcome back in Britain, noting there are still sanctions in place against her.

But when asked on Monday whether she would be stripped of her citizenship, the Prime Ministers official spokesman said: I think we?ve always said that we don?t comment on any individuals in relation to this.

Mrs Assad had her UK assets frozen as part of an EU sanctions programme in March 2012 amid growing protests against her husbands rule.

These sanctions have been upheld since Brexit and in 2021, the Metropolitan Police opened a preliminary investigation into allegations that she incited and aided war crimes committed by the Assad regimes forces during Syrias 13-year civil war.

The US imposed sanctions on Mrs Assad, her parents and two brothers in 2020. Mike Pompeo, then secretary of state, called her one of Syrias most notorious war profiteers
