The last time this happened, places like Reddit and Slashdot experienced crashes because of a kernel bug. This mainly effected Linux kernel distributions earlier than version 2.6.29. It also effected switches, load balancers, spam filters, email gateways, and NAS devices.

This time several venders have released patches and fixes.
So all this hit at around the same time.

The server confirmed it was a dos attack, I am so glad our Senior Admin, itisjust4fun, does a site back up every day, so we and our members are not affected. Many many other sites never do this.
