ALL FULL OF SINGLE BLACK MEN - NO FAMILIES
Footage has emerged of the moment a French border guard vessel attempted to ram a heavily overloaded migrant craft as it set out for the perilous Channel crossing to Britain this morning.
The black inflatable dinghy carrying dozens of migrants set off from Gravelines beach close to the port of Calais around 7:30am local time this morning in what appeared to be fairly calm waters.
But the migrants made it less than 100ft into the sea before being spotted by a French board guard unit in a speedboat.
Flashing blue and red lights, the speedboat made a couple of close passes by the dinghy, warning it to turn around and head for shore.
When the dinghy continued on, the coastguard craft pulled up alongside before appearing to ram the sorely overloaded migrant vessel.
Witnesses on the beach in Gravelines said the migrant boat was then pursued by a French naval vessel and the coastguard search and rescue craft 'Ridens' which attempted to shepherd the dinghy into Calais port.
More than 19,000 migrants have entered the UK by small boat in 2024 so far - after nearly 500 people crossed the channel on Saturday, according to Home Office figures.
On August 17, 492 migrants crossed in nine boats - taking the provisional total for the year so far to 19,066.
This is a 10% increase on the figure recorded last year, which was 17,346.
But the latest figure is 10% down on 2022, when 21,130 crossings were recorded in the same period.
Last week saw the largest number of crossings in a single day since the Labour Government took power, when 703 people were recorded as arriving in the UK last Sunday in 11 boats - suggesting an average of 64 people per boat.
