Kamala Harris has selected Tim Walz, Minnesota’s governor, as her running mate to take on Donald Trump and JD Vance at the election in under three months, multiple sources have told CNN.

Four people close to the process have confirmed the news to the US site.

Mr Walz, 60, a straight-talking former teacher and National Guard officer, emerged as the favourite contender of the Democrat’s Left flank, while capturing Minnesota will be key for Ms Harris.

On Monday night, Ms Harris, 59, officially became the first woman of colour to lead a major party ticket after the Democratic National Committee announced the formal voting results.

The vice-president will now hold her first public appearance with Mr Walz at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday to kick off a five-day campaign blitz across seven battlefield states.
