Former attorney Michael Cohen revealed to a Manhattan jury what one analyst called "damning" legal evidence against former President Donald Trump.

"I felt reassured because I had the president of the United States protecting me," Cohen told the jury.

"[Trump] said to me don't worry. I'm the president of the United States. There's nothing here. Everything's going to be okay. Stay tough. You're going to be okay," he added.

Although Trump never spoke to Cohen again, the former attorney said he believed the then-president was communicating with him when he cautioned against "flipping" in Twitter postings.

"Stay in the fold. Stay loyal. I have you. [...] Don't flip," said Cohen of his interpretation of one particular Trump tweet.

Analyst Katie Phang said the prosecution had landed a blow against the defense.

"DAMNING evidence from Michael Cohen," she wrote.
