Aura and her brother, Fidencio, finally reunited after 52 years

A woman has finally been reunited with her family after being abducted from a shop more than 50 years ago.

Aura Guerrero León was just four years old when she was kidnapped in 1972 after going to a local shop to buy sweets. According to local reports, the young girl was snatched from her home in the Bravo Páez area of the Colombian capital, Bogotá, and taken to the town of Villarrica about 110 miles away.

She was later found on the streets, and was taken in by a family who called her Gina. Aura is believed to have left home at the age of 12, and reportedly lived alone in a rented flat in Bogotá. Recalling the moment she was kidnapped all those years ago, Aura told Caracol News: “I went out to buy a cookie and went to the corner, which was a neighbourhood store.

"An old man was passing by, he scared me, I hid behind the bus while the old man passed by and the woman who kidnapped me arrived, tall, dark, with long hair and thin." But her parents never gave up hope of finding her, and they spent the rest of their lives scouring the country in search of her.

Her brother, Fidencio Guerrero León, regularly changed schools as the family travelled from town to town. He picked up sticks every time they received word of another possible sighting.

Sadly, both parents died before tracking her down. But her brother carried on their mission, and eventually found her on Facebook after spotting a woman with a remarkable likeness to his late mum. He told local media: “One day, I came across a search campaign and when I looked at the photo, I immediately noticed my mother.”

The siblings were reunited last week after a 52-year absence . Aura said: “It's a dream come true.” Fidencio added: “This year is going to be incredibly special because Aura is here and we are complete again.” According to the International Commission on Missing Persons, there are over 14,181 missing children and teenagers in Colombia.

Back in the UK, a mum abandoned in fruit box as a baby tracked down her brother and sister more than half a century later. Caroline Harris-Grey, 54, always knew she was adopted but it wasn't until she gave birth to her own son that she began to look into her past and discovered two half siblings.

After fruitless efforts, she contacted Long Lost Family, hosted by Nicky Campbell and Davina McCall, in 2021.
