Taiwan Earthquake: 70 Miners Trapped Underground After Horror 7.4-Scale Quake

Nine were killed and hundreds more injured in the 7.2-magnitude earthquake when it rocked off the coast of Taiwans' mountainous Hualien County in the early hours of this morning (GMT)

At least 70 miners are trapped in a cave in Taiwan following the strongest earthquake in a quarter-century.

The 7.7-magnitude quake rocked the country during Wednesday's morning rush hour, killing nine and sending others scrambling from the windows of damaged buildings.

Train services were brought to a halt across the island as a tsunami warning of three-metre-high waves was also triggered.
The quake, which also injured hundreds, was centred off the coast of rural, mountainous Hualien County, where some buildings leaned at severe angles, their ground floors crushed. Just over 93 miles away in the capital of Taipei, tiles fell from older buildings, and schools evacuated their students to sports fields, equipping them with yellow safety helmets.

Some children covered themselves with textbooks to guard against falling objects as aftershocks continued.

Taiwanese authorities later confirmed that 70 miners had become trapped in two coal mines. The vast majority, sixty-four of them, are said to have been trapped in one mine, while another six were trapped at a separate location, according to Taiwan's National Fire Agency.
