Boxing 5x Champ Found Dead at 45

Former Boxing Champion Johnny Tapia Found Dead Sunday Night

May 28, 2012

Former boxing star Johnny Tapia was found dead on Sunday night, according to a report from the Associated Press. One of the most polarizing boxers of his era, Tapia was a five-time champion that often found trouble outside the ring.
He finished his career with a 59-5-2 record, including 30 knockout victories, according to BoxRec.com. His last fight came nearly one year ago, when he defeated Mauricio Pastrana by unanimous decision in his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.

Tapia won titles in three different divisions, helping him become a fan favorite during his peak years. Unfortunately, despite his terrific success between the ropes, fans will also remember all of the problems he had in his personal life.
The report mentions issues with drugs, alcohol and depression, along with several stints in jail. It didn't stop his fans from supporting him, however, knowing he had overcome so much just to reach that point after losing his mother when he was eight.

His nickname was "Mi Vida Loca," which translates to "my crazy life" and was a perfect match for the powerful American. Nobody knows how good he could have been if he stayed on the straight and narrow, but it's a path Tapia never found.
Only time will tell if he's remembered more for the great boxing ability he showcased or the circumstances surrounding him. Either way, Tapia went through a lot during his life and was still able to become a champion, which says a lot about his will to win.
The cause of death wasn't immediately known, with an autopsy to come over the next few days, according to the AP report. Tapia was 45 years old.
END

Very sad....RIP Johnny
