Terrifying shark attack in Elizabeth bay leaves swimmer seriously injuried

Elizabeth Bay swimmer taken to hospital in critical condition after being bitten on the right leg by suspected bull shark

The Guardian Australia 30 JAN 2024

A woman sustained serious injuries after she was attacked by a suspected bull shark in Sydney Harbour.

The woman, who is in her late 20s, was bitten on the right leg by a suspected bull shark in Elizabeth Bay on Monday night.

Paramedics were called to Billyard Avenue about 7.45pm to help the woman, who had managed to swim to a jetty following the attack, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.

A vet who was nearby administered first aid on the injured woman, who had severe blood loss from injuries to her lower leg, and she was taken to St Vincent’s hospital in a critical condition.

A local resident told the Sydney Morning Herald that he ran out of his house when he heard a scream to see the woman trying to pull herself out of the water.

“She had been attacked about 20 metres off from the jetty – there was blood all throughout the water and all over the jetty,” he said.

In a statement, police said: “She has been taken to St Vincent’s hospital in a stable condition. Police have been told she was swimming off the wharf at the time.

“Marine area command are patrolling the area as a precaution.”

The woman was in a stable condition at St Vincent’s on Tuesday morning.
