Arctic blast: At least two dead as 'historic' winter storm blasts across the US

9 News Australia 14 JAN 2024

A massive winter storm has swept across the lower 48 states, causing chaos with blinding snow, freezing rain and extremely cold temperatures.

This severe weather has disrupted travel plans and claimed the lives of at least two people. Almost every state in the lower 48 has issued a weather warning. High wind warnings or advisories are affecting around 120 million people, while winter storm warnings or advisories are impacting about 48 million. Over five million people are under blizzard warnings.

In Chicago's suburbs, a man tragically died of exposure, marking the first cold-related death of the season. The man, who hasn't been identified, was found on Thursday in the Schiller Park area, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Meanwhile, in Idaho, two men were rescued after being caught in an avalanche near the Montana border on Thursday afternoon. Sadly, a third man is missing and presumed dead. A Wisconsin man also lost his life while clearing snow from his driveway.

This is the first major Arctic-like blast of the winter. It's expected to move from the northern Rockies and Plains further south and east through the Midwest. Record-breaking low temperatures are predicted, dipping into the minus 20s Fahrenheit, minus 30s and even as low as minus 40F in the northern Plains.

Mondays' temperatures are forecasted to be the coldest in modern history for the Iowa caucuses, with a high of around 0F degrees expected in Des Moines.
