Cyclone Jasper has made landfall in North Queensland

First boat sunk by Cyclone Jasper spills diesel through Cairns marina

Footage captured by north Queensland fishing guide Moody Ryan Fishing shows a yatch has sunk in the Cairns marina.

The short 20-second video was uploaded at 7pm AEST as Cyclone Jasper continued to move inland.

'Looks like the cyclone has claimed its first victim,' a woman said in the clip.

'You can smell the diesel.'

Dozens of commenters expressed sympathy for the boat owner while others claimed the leak could have been caused by a 'bilge pump fail'.

'Poor bugger!,' one said.

'Bilge pump and a charged battery would have saved it,' another wrote.

'Hope they are insured and hope the fellow boaties rally around them,' another said.

Where is Cyclone Jasper Headed?

The Bureau of Meteorology has released its latest track map for Cyclone Jasper.

It shared a map showing the system's expected path shortly before 6.30pm AEST.

'Tropical Cyclone Jasper, category 2, is producing damaging to destructive wind gusts on the Far North Queensland coast as it slowly makes landfall in the vicinity of Wujal Wujal, just north of Cape Tribulation,' the Bureau wrote.

The current warning zone is from Cape Melville to Cardwell, including Cairns and Innisfail and extending inland to include the Atherton Tablelands, Chillagoe and Palmerville.

Wind gusts are currently reaching up to 140km/h with the system travelling southwest at 9km/h.

Intense rainfall between Cape Tribulation and Cairns could cause dangerous and life-threating flash flooding.

'Isolated six-hourly rainfall totals between 250 to 300mm are likely with 24-hourly totals between 400 to 500mm possible,' the Bureau said.
