Robert De Niro furiously shouted "shame on you!" at his former assistant as she is suing him in a New York courtroom this week.

The Oscar-winning actor, 80, shouted as he testified in a New York courtroom on Tuesday, directing the comments toward his former executive assistant and vice president Graham Chase Robinson, who is seeking millions of dollars after accusing her ex-boss of being abusive.

The 41-year-old watched with her lawyers while The Raging Bull star’s anger built as attorney Andrew Macurdy discussed accusations his client made about De Niro's behaviour toward Robinson as she served his needs from 2008 until 2019.

De Niro apologised for his outburst in court during the fiery trial

The former assistant is seeking $12 million in damages for emotional distress and reputational harm that she claims has left her jobless and unable to recover from the trauma of working for De Niro. Robinson was reportedly making $300,000 per year when she quit, frustrated by her interactions with De Niro's girlfriend Tiffany Chen and the effect she believed the girlfriend was having on the actor.

The jury is also considering evidence pertaining to a lawsuit De Niro filed against Robinson in which he claimed that she stole things from him, including charging personal meals and groceries to the company’s credit card and inappropriately used “her employer’s fund for her personal gain” including the actor’s frequent flyer airline miles.

De Niro is also seeking the return of three years of Robinson's salary.
