Wagner Boss Prigozhin WAS on Crashed Plane, Russia Confirms

Yevgeny Prigozhin became a household name after he launched a short-lived and ultimately unsuccessful coup against the Russian armed forces in June.

He was the head of the Wagner group - a band of mercenaries heavily involved in the Ukraine war until the mutiny.

He has a chequered past to say the least , and the man who was once President Vladimir Putin's chef had no shortage of enemies. It has therefore come as no surprise to many that he is now presumed dead. Russia's aviation authority say he was on a plane that crashed north of Moscow with no survivors.

He last appeared in a video - the picture above is a screengrab – apparently recorded in Africa this month. There is a huge amount of speculation as to what exactly happened

Our Russia editor Steve Rosenberg says that if this was an act of revenge by those in power, it sends a clear message to anyone else in Russia who may have been contemplating armed resistance.
