Marketa Vondrousova wins womens’ title with stunning victory over Ons Jabeur

Marketa Vondrousova triumphed over Ons Jabeur in straight sets to win the Wimbledon women’s singles final, capping off an enthralling fortnight of tennis on their side of the draw.

The Czech star used her combination of slice, spin and drop shots to triumph 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court in front of a crowd desperate to see Jabeur triumph after losing to Elena Rybakina in last year’s final. Jabeur described this match as “the most painful loss of my career” in her post-match interview after heading in as a heavy favourite against her unseeded opponent.

However, Vondrousova was too strong on a day where neither woman could reliably hold their serve and she became the first unseeded women’s singles champion in the open era after a storming run over the past fortnight in SW19.
