Prince Andrew To Keep Taxpayer-Funded Police Bodyguards After Security Review

The Duke of York's Metropolitan Police and Home Office security detail was assessed after the Queen stripped him of his military affiliations and royal patronages

Daily Mirror 14 AUG 2022

Prince Andrew will keep his state-funded police bodyguards following a review of his security arrangements. But Prince Harry is having to take LEGAL action after his police security detail was removed whilst he was in the UK

The Duke of York's Metropolitan Police and Home Office security detail was assessed after the Queen stripped her second-eldest son of his military affiliations and royal patronages and removed his HRH (His Royal Highness) title.

The decision was made after Virginia Giuffre claimed Jeffrey Epstein forced her to have sex with Andrew on three occasions when she was just 17 and brought a legal case against him in the US.

Andrew later agreed to a financial settlement with Ms Giuffre. He has always vehemently denied the claims.

It was originally claimed that the settlement cost £12 million but it was reported last weekend that a reduced deal between £3 million and £5 million was negotiated by Andrew's lawyers.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee concluded that Andrew was still entitled to the round-the-clock police protection.

He will still be accompanied by a personal protection officer whenever he leaves his home. Permanent security arrangements are in place for the 30-room Royal Lodge on the Queen’s Windsor estate.

Official royal duties are no longer assigned to Andrew. With the exception of horse riding and frequently visiting the Queen, it is not known how he currently fills his time.

The taxpayer pays for his police protection at an estimated cost of between £2 million and £3 million a year.

Andrew's daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie lost their taxpayer-funded protection after a row in 2011.

It is thought Prince Charles stepped in after the younger of his nieces racked up huge security costs as she travelled the world on her gap year.

A report published at the time suggested Eugenie spent more than £100,000 of taxpayers' money as she explored India, America, Thailand and South Africa.

She paid for hotels and travel herself, but the massive security bill, including overtime money, was funded by the taxpayer.

Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex also do not have round-the-clock security.

They are only guarded by police protection officers while carrying out official duties and engagements.

The Home Office and Met Police have been contacted for comment.
