Humpback Whale-watching Season Starts Sunday 15 Jan 2012

Santo Domingo.- Starting Sunday Dominicans and foreigners alike will be able to observe the humpback whales which visit the Atlantic coast every year, an arrival Environment minister Ernesto Reyna affirms will mean more income for northeastern Samaná and Hato Mayor provinces.
The official said the whale watching season lasts until March and draws around 30,000 foreign and Dominican tourists who eagerly take to boats and observation spots to watch the cetaceans, which come from the waters off Iceland, Greenland, Canada, to the Caribbean region.
Samaná Bay’s Humpback Whales Sanctuary is located in the country’s Northeast, where around 3,000 of the marine mammals mate and calve along the Atlantic coast, between December and April.

This is incredible to watch. These whales, with their babies, play with the boats and tease them by hiding, then they pop up in other parts. By the time the big tourist boats turn around, the whales have moved to hide and pop up in other areas. Its hilarious and great fun to watch it.
We went in a small boat away from the tourists and saw much more cos we could move faster. They really are beautiful and very intelligent.
