Monaco GP Red-Flagged as Mick Schumachers' Car Dramatically Splits in Half

Mick Schumacher crashed into the barrier at the Swimming Pool chicane with his car splitting in half at the Monaco Grand Prix - but he was able to walk away unhurt

Daily Mirror 29 MAY 2022

The Monaco Grand Prix has been red-flagged after Mick Schumacher's car dramatically split in half as he crashed at the Swimming Pool chicane.

Thirty of the 77 laps had been completed after the race was initially delayed by over an hour due to rain.

Schumacher, 23, lost control of his Haas before slamming into the barrier. He was remarkably able to walk away from the accident.

"I am OK,'' he said. "I just don't understand it.''

The race was red-flagged due to significant damage to the tyre barrier.

After a 20-minute delay, the race was able to resume at 5.15pm local time, with Sergio Perez leading from Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen and Chales Leclerc.

The damage caused to Schumacher's car

The drama came after the start of the race was delayed following a rain shower. It was due to get under way at 3pm local time before it was pushed back to 3.09pm and then a further unspecified delay was announced.

The formation lap to the grid was ordered to take place behind the safety car, with Charles Leclerc starting from pole position.

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, then announced the formation lap would start at 3:16pm, behind the safety car. As the heavy rain continued, the race was suspended four minutes after the start of the formation lap. Ferrari driver Leclerc said over the team radio: "It is raining like crazy.''

The race finally got underway at 4.05pm local time, over an hour after it was initially scheduled to begin.

It's not the first time Schumacher has been involved in a crash this season after a high-impact incident during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix saw him miss the race in Jeddah.

He was released from hospital following that incident after precautionary checks.

Schumacher, son of legendary F1 driver Michael, is yet to register a point after 27 race starts.
