American WW2 TRAITOR -US Pilot That Defected To The Nazis
American WW2 TRAITOR - The USAAF Pilot That Defected To The Nazis
21 Apr 2022 TheUntoldPast
During the Second World War, to defect over to the enemies was seen as a treason and it was something that someone could be executed for. One example is William Joyce, Lord Haw Haw.
He defected from Britain to the Nazis and was involved in many different propaganda broadcasts within Hitler's Germany. There was an American Pilot who had a similar role within Hitler's Third Reich, in which he made anti-American and pro-Nazi propaganda for Hitler's government. Martin James Monti's defection from the Allies to the Axis was incredibly dramatic and shocking.
Martin James Monti was staunchly anti-communist and following becoming a Flying Officer in the United States Army Air Force, he stole a P-38 Lightning aircraft. He said he was taking the aircraft for a test flight, but instead he flew the aircraft from Italy to Nazi Germany and then surrendered himself to the Germans.
He defected over, and then was sent to Berlin where he found a job inside of Joseph Goebbels' propaganda ministry and he made a number of radio broadcasts. There was suspicion that he was a spy, but he was made a member of the SS too. But as the Second World War turned against the Germans
He made the decision to head back to Italy and he surrendered himself over to the Allies.
Following the end of World War Two, he was brought to trial and was accused of stealing a USAAF aircraft. He was sentenced to a suspended sentence for this, but later his true identity came out. Monti was found to have been the man who made the Nazi propaganda broadcasts
He was then imprisoned for 25 years for treason. He could have been executed for this, but he tried to claim the only reason he stole the aircraft was to kill Hitler and end the war which was nonsense.
