It is thought at least 20 others were critically injured in the smash after about 150 people had gathered in Strépy-Bracquegnies near La Louvière in the province of Hainaut at 5am...

Earlier reports said four people had been killed but local news site rtl.be says that figure has since risen to six.

The vehicle reportedly "accelerated" into the crowd as they heard "an immense noise" behind them.

Claude Hautain, director of urgent medical aid for Hainaut, said six people died at the scene, 10 sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital while 27 others suffered minor injuries.

There were two people in the car and both have been arrested, authorities said during a press conference this morning.
