Putins' Price For Peace
Ukraine Crisis: Putin Lays Out His Demands
The Russian President called for Crimea - annexed by Moscow in 2014 - to be recognised as part of Russia, a halt to weapons shipments to Ukraine and an end to Kyiv's bid to join NATO.

As Russian troops were ordered into eastern Ukraine, Vladimir Putin set out what he wanted if the country was to be spared war.
Might this prove a pivotal moment? Russia has set out its demands to end the conflict in Ukraine for the first time. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia had told Ukraine it was ready to halt its military action "in a moment" if Kyiv met its conditions, which include acknowledgement of Crimea as Russian territory.
Yet the deal, which would surely be unacceptable to the Ukrainians, would spell the end of the country's ambitions to join the EU and Nato.
Vladimir Putin might just settle for a land grab if his price for peace is to be believed. As one of the most powerful militaries on the planet, Russia had been expected by analysts to prevail when the war started 12 days ago. However the efforts of the Ukrainian forces have raised the prospect of Russian tactical defeat on the battlefield, with potential strategic implications at home.
