The White House is warning that a Russian attack on Ukraine, could be imminent.


After a huge build up of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border, American officials say Moscow now has the capability, to launch a major military operation, including an attack on the capital Kyiv.

Moscow has practically encircled its smaller neighbour, with close to 130,000 troops, but maintains no invasion is being planned.


Diplomatic efforts are continuing to defuse the crisis.








Memories of Ukraines’ Great Famine Fuel Resentment of Russia

The current tensions between Ukraine and Russia have deep historical roots.

Russia and other nations have long sought to determine Ukraine’s destiny, contributing to the rise of Ukrainian nationalism and demands for self-determination.

In the Great Famine of the 1930s, as many as four million Ukrainians died during the forced collectivisation of Ukraine’s farms by the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. The bitterness remains to this day.

Clive Myrie presents a BBC News at Ten special report by Fergal Keane from Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, who met some of the last survivors of the famine.
