A Boeing 737 cargo plane has gone down into the ocean off Hawaii after experiencing engine trouble, with the severity of the crash, near Honolulu, unclear

A Boeing 737 cargo plane carrying two crew members has gone down into the ocean off Hawaii after experiencing engine trouble.

The severity of the crash, near Honolulu, remains unclear but both people on board were rescued with one airlifted to hospital and the other taken to shore, according to reports.

Transair Flight 810 went down off West Oahu, about two miles off Kalaeloa Airport, at around 2.06am local time on Friday.

The aircraft had departed from the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and was heading to Kahului, Maui, reported Hawaii News Now.

ABC News' Alex Stone tweeted that both crew members were alive.
